Picture Perfect...

RHP Jeanmar Gomez made history yesterday, delivering the first perfect game in Aeros franchise history as Akron defeated Trenton 3-0 at Waterfront Park. Not only was it the first perfect game in team history, it was also the first perfect game ever at Waterfront Park and the first individual no-hitter in Akron franchise history, following a pair of combined no-hitters in 2003. Gomez recorded eight strikeouts (tying his season-high), nine groundball outs, and 10 fly outs, and did it all in just 87 pitches. The Aeros supported him with two runs in the top of the third and one more in the seventh, improving to 26-3 when the offense scores at least three runs in a game. Gomez, who threw a first-pitch strike to 21 of the 27 batters he faced and went to a three-ball count only once, said he had previously thrown a no-hitter in high school but never a perfect game.

History Lesson...

Gomez's gem was the seventh perfect game in Eastern League history, but only the second nine-inning perfect game in the 76-year history of the league (dating to 1923). The only other nine-inning perfect game occurred May 23rd, 1943 when Scranton's Chet Covington blanked Albany 6-0. The latest perfect game in the EL came June 28th, 2004 when Jamie Vermilyea defeated New Britain 2-0 in seven innings in game two of a doubleheader at New Hampshire. The last nine-inning no-hitter in EL history was June 1st, 2007 by Bowie's Radhames Liz (defeated Harrisburg 5-0). Gomez also made history by tossing the first perfect game in minor league baseball since Guillermo Moscoso did so for Oneonta of the short-season New York-Penn League July 15th 2007, and it was only the third no-hitter of any kind thus far this year in the minors.

Aeros Pitching Records...

It was the first no-hitter for Akron since July 7th, 2003 when Chad Durbin and Oscar Alvarez combined to no-no Bowie 4-0, and just the third in team history. Gomez now owns the two longest starts for an Aero this season, as he pitched eight innings his last time out against Altoona, and then became the first pitcher to collect a complete game yesterday. It was the first nine-inning complete game for Akron since Adam Miller went the distance August 10th, 2006 at New Hampshire, and Gomez now leads the entire Indians organization with six wins and a 1.39 ERA between Kinston and Akron and ranks second with 41 strikeouts. He is also third in minor league baseball with a .147 batting average against.

Give Me More Gomez...

The 21-year-old native of Caracas, Venezuela improved to 4-0 in four starts for Akron since being promoted from Class A Kinston April 29th. In 29 innings as an Aero he has allowed just nine hits and one run (0.31 ERA) while walking one and striking out a ridiculous 26 batters. Additionally, Gomez has allowed just one earned run while winning each of his last six starts (42.0 IP, 0.21 ERA, 15 hits, four walks, 35 strikeouts), and has now tossed 27.1 consecutive scoreless innings.

Did You Know...

It was the first perfect game for the Indians organization since Kinston's Keith Ramsey on September 6, 2004.
