Trenton Thunder To Host RBI Tournament

(Trenton, NJ) - The Trenton Thunder and Boys & Girls Club of Trenton will host the Northeast Regional RBI (Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities) Regional Tournament presented by KPMG. The tournament will begin Thursday, July 10th and run until Sunday, July 13th. Games will be played at Mercer County Park, Hamilton Lou Gehrig, Mercer County Community College and the championship games will be played at Waterfront Park.

Founded in 1989 by former Major Leaguer John Young, RBI gives youngsters from disadvantaged areas the opportunity to play baseball and softball, while promoting academics and healthy lifestyles. In 1997, the Thunder became the first Minor League team to become involved in the program.

The tournament has three divisions: Junior Boys for 13-15 year olds and Senior Boys for 16-18 year olds and Girls Softball for 15-18 year olds.

Teams from Baltimore, MD, Boston, MA, Bridgeport, CT, Jersey City, NJ, New York City, Newport News, VA, Norfolk, VA, Pawtucket, RI, Philadelphia, PA, Reading, PA, Washington D.C., Waterville, ME, and Worchester, MA are expected to compete. Trenton will be represented by a team from the Lou Gehrig League, Mitchell Davis Post 182 and the Trenton Schroths Post 93, who as host received an automatic berth.

The Jr. Boys Division Championship will be played at Waterfront Park on July 12 at 11:00 AM. The Sr. Boys Division will play their Championship at Waterfront Park on July 13 10:00 AM.

Winners of the tournament will join other regional winners at the RBI World Series. The series will be held from August 5th to the 16th in Los Angeles, California. The series is co-sponsored by Major League Baseball and Rawlings.
