Trenton sweeps doubleheader against Portland on Saturday night

(Portland, ME)- Trenton scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning and went on for a 3-0 win over Portland in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday night from Hadlock Field in Portland, ME. Trenton swept the doubleheader by taking the first game 5-4. The Thunder now leads the Sea Dogs by 8 1/2 games in the Northern Division. Trenton lead the season-series 11-5 over Portland.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Thunder center fielder Austin Jackson broke a 4-4 tie in the top of the seventh inning with a solo home run to lift Trenton to a 5-4 victory over Portland. Trenton rallied from behind as Portland took a 3-0 lead in the third inning. The Sea Dogs received an RBI double by Center fielder Mickey Hall, an RBI single by Designated Hitter Aaron Bates, and an RBI double by Catcher Mark Wagner in the three-run frame. Trenton tied the game with three runs in the fourth inning. The big hits in the frame were a two-run single by Catcher P.J. Pilittere, and an RBI double by First baseman Cody Ehlers. Trenton took a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning on an RBI infield single by Third baseman Chris Malec. Portland tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI single by Right fielder Zach Daeges. Trenton reliever Mark Melancon (5-0) picked up the win going the final three innings for Trenton. Melancon allowed three hits and one run. He struck out three and walked one. Thunder starting pitcher Eric Hacker received a no-decision as he gave up six hits and three earned runs in four innings.

Thunder RF Edwar Gonzalez produced the go-ahead RBI single off of Portland reliever T.J. Large (0-1) in the seventh inning of the doubleheader night-cap. Later in the frame, Catcher Joe Muich provided insurance with a two-run single to make it 3-0. Trenton starting pitcher Phil Coke (9-4) went six shutout innings to earn the win. He allowed only two hits. He struck out 10 and walked 4. Thunder reliever Eric Wordekemper pitched a scoreless seventh inning to pick up his sixth save. Portland starting pitcher Adam Mills tossed six shutout innings. He scattered three hits and did not walk a batter. Mills struck out six in an no-decision.

Trenton and Portland will wrap up the four-game series on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. RHP George Kontos (3-9, 3.54) will start for Trenton against Portland LHP Dave Gassner (1-5, 7.68).
