Trenton gets two for the price of won, beats Portland 5-4 and 3-0

(Portland, ME) - The Trenton Thunder (62-37) swept a doubleheader from the Portland Sea Dogs (53-45) on Saturday night, 5-4 and 3-0 at Hadlock Field. Portland has lost the first three games of the series and fall 8.5 games behind Trenton for the top spot in the Northern Division.

Trenton CF Austin Jackson scored the game-winning run in both games. In the opener, Jackson snapped a 4-4 tie by launching a solo-homer off Mike James (3-4) with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. In the nightcap, Jackson began the seventh with a double and scored on Edwar Gonzalez's run-scoring single.

Portland was out hit 14-11 in the twinbill, picking up just two hits in game two.

In the opener, Mark Melancon (5-0) worked the final three innings in relief of Eric Hacker to earn the win. Portland took a 3-0 lead off Hacker in the third inning on three 2-out run-scoring hits by Mickey Hall (single), Aaron Bates (single) and Mark Wagner (double). Trenton tied the game in the next half inning off Kyle Jackson. P.J. Pilittere delivered a 2-run single and Cody Ehlers knocked Jackson out of the game with an RBI double.

The Sea Dogs trailed 4-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning but tied the game on Hall's second RBI single of the contest.

In the nightcap, Phil Coke (9-4) worked six scoreless frames on two hits, four walks and 10 strikeouts to earn the win. Eric Wordekemper fired a perfect ninth inning to earn his sixth save of the year.

Adam Mills took a tough no-decision for the 'Dogs, hurling six scoreless frames on three hits, no walks and a season-high six strikeouts. Trenton beat T.J. Large, scoring three times in the top of the seventh inning. After Gonzalez made it 1-0 with an RBI single, Cody Ehlers was intentionally walked and Joe Muich delivered a 2-run single.

Portland looks to avoid a 4-game sweep of Trenton on Sunday afternoon beginning at 1:00 PM. Sunday's game is sold out for the rest of the homestand but you can catch all the action on the U.S. Cellular Sea Dogs Radio Network beginning at 12:40 PM.
