Shut Down...Akron's offense could not muster much off Erie's pitching staff in their 3-1 loss last night at Canal Park, failing to capitalize on a strong pitching performance by LHP Ryan Edell. The Boston, MA native worked five innings and allowed just two runs (one earned) on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts. LHP Chuck Lofgren came on in relief and surrendered just one hit with three strikeouts in two innings. The bats, though, could not get going off Erie starter Lauren Gagnier or relievers Juan Cedeno and Casey Fien, who picked up his second save in as many nights. The only run for Akron came in the fifth without the help of a hit. SS Brandon Chaves walked, stole second, advanced to third on a fly out, and scored on an RBI groundout by 2B Josh Rodriguez. LF Bronson Sardinha and 1B Matt Whitney each had two hits for Akron.
Whittling Away...Akron 1B/DH Matt Whitney has put together a solid couple of weeks. He has collected hits in 10 of his last 13 contests and has compiled five multi-hit games in that span, while hitting .362 (17-47) with three doubles, two home runs, 11 RBI, and nine walks. The 2002 first-round pick has bumped his batting average from .244 to .260 on the year.
More Moves...The Aeros swapped an Olympian for an Olympian today, activating OF Matt LaPorta and placing RHP T.J. Burton on the temporary inactive list. Both players will be with the club for around another week, with Burton set to join Team Canada on July 25th and LaPorta slated to join the American national team July 27th.
Did You Know...The Aeros are 32-14 in one or two-run games and are unbeaten (48-0) when they take a lead into the ninth.
