Akron RubberDucks News Release
AKRON, OH - Fausto Carmona worked five innings and surrendered just a run on nine hits in Akron's 7-2 win over Erie Saturday night before 6,056 fans at Canal Park. The Aeros turned four double plays, including three behind Carmona, helping the Aeros hold the SeaWolves to two runs despite allowing 14 hits. The Aeros improved to 62-37, while Erie fell to 41-59.
Trevor Crowe manufactured a run almost by himself to give Akron a 1-0, first-inning lead. He led off with an infield single to third, and proceeded to steal second and third bases before Matt LaPorta delivered a sacrifice fly to give Akron the lead.
The Aeros put the game away with four runs in the fourth. Wes Hodges reached on an error to lead off, and Wyatt Toregas pounded his ninth home run of the season to left-center to make it 3-0. Stephen Head and Ryan Goleski then singled, and Brandon Pinckney drove in Head on a hit-and-run base hit. Crowe followed with an RBI fielder's choice to snag a five-run lead.
Carmona used his signature sinker to force three double plays against Erie, getting a twin-killing in the first, second, and fifth innings. He nearly got another in the third, but Shawn Roof beat out Josh Rodriguez's relay throw. The SeaWolves picked up their only run off Carmona in the fifth with three straight two-out singles.
The Aeros picked up single runs in the sixth and eighth innings on a run-scoring double play by Ryan Goleski and an RBI knock by Head. Erie tacked on the final run in the ninth off Kevin Dixon, who entered in relief to get his work in on his rotation day.
Carmona (1-0) picked up the win and struck out two while walking none in five innings. He threw 66 pitches (with 47 going for strikes) before finishing his rehab stint inside in the batting tunnel. Erie starter Danny Christensen (5-8) took the loss, working four innings and surrendering five runs (three earned) on four hits while walking two and striking out five. Dixon picked up the save in his first relief appearance since September 1st of last season. He allowed one run on five hits in four innings. Head had three hits for the Aeros and Toregas drove in two runs on his homer.
The Aeros will look for the series split Sunday at 2:05 p.m., but the gates will open at 10:30 a.m. as Aeros players will hold an open autograph session from 11:00 to 11:45. Aeros left-hander Scott Lewis (4-2, 3.73 ERA) takes the hill against Erie southpaw Luke French (5-10, 4.70 ERA). Kids will also be able to run the bases after the game. The game broadcast begins at 1:50 p.m. on SportsRadio 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at (330) 253-5151.
