Charlotte Checkers News Release
(Charlotte, NC - Friday, October 31, 2003) - The Checkers are making a habit of running into hot teams. Wednesday night Charlotte tackled the undefeated Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies, and Friday night the Checkers dropped a 5-2 decision to the Trenton Titans who won their third straight game. Matt Zultek scored a hat trick while Dan Riva had a goal and assist for Trenton. Titans goalie Andrew Allen earned his third win of the season with 35 saves. Charlotte got goals from Dave Inman and Lucas Lawson, while goalie Scott Meyer was the tough luck loser making 28 saves while suffering his second defeat.
"We did not play a 60 minute hockey game tonight," quoted Checkers Head Coach, Don MacAdam. "Our forwards were not very good, and without Konrad McKay, Brandon Cullen and Steve MacIntyre in the lineup we are not very physical."
The Titans scored first as leading scorer Matt Zultek scored from in close on a rebound with Trenton on a power play for a 1-0 lead at 6:36 of the first period. Charlotte tied the game at 17:36 when Inman scored off feeds from Patrick Aufiero and Marc St. Jean, and the two teams went to the locker room tied at 1-1.
In the second period Zultek scored his second goal of the night on assists from Scott Bertoli and Billy Cass at 7:04 for a 2-1 lead. The Checkers had two power play opportunities in the period and had several quality chances but were not able to solve Allen.
Trenton increased their lead to 3-1 early in the third period as Riva notched his second goal of the season at 2:22. The Checkers fought back as Lawson pulled the trigger and beat Allen at 5:03 to pull Charlotte to within one at 3-2. Following a goal-mouth scramble that had Meyer a bit woozy, Trenton got their two-goal lead right back when Peter Metcalfe's shot trickled in for a 4-2 Titans advantage at 10:30. On the goal-mouth scramble, Charlotte defenseman Doug MacIver tripped a Titans player into Meyer which put Trenton on the power play on their way to their fourth goal. Trenton got a late empty-net goal to finish the 5-2 final.
The Titans improved to 3-3-0 for six points while the Checkers fell to 2-2-1. Charlotte will play two games on the road this weekend, battling the Inferno in Columbia Saturday night at 7:30 p.m., and traveling to Roanoke Sunday afternoon for a 4:00 p.m. faceoff. Both games can be accessed through the Internet and on the telephone through TEAMLINE. Fans can get connection information by logging on to the Checkers web site at www.gocheckers.com.
