Manchester Monarchs News Release

MANCHESTER, NH – Right wing Scott Barney led the way with two goals as the Manchester Monarchs won for the second straight time, topping the Lowell Lock Monsters, 5-3, on Saturday night before a near sellout crowd of 9,682 at the Verizon Wireless Arena.

The win was also the Monarchs (4-5-0-1) second straight over the Lock Monsters (4-3-1-0), who are winless in their last four games. The Monarchs lead the season series with their closest rival with a 2-1-0-0 record after three games.

Each team dented the scoreboard twice in the opening stanza with centers Mike Zigomanis and Brett Lysak scoring for the Lock Monsters, and Barney and center Steve Kelly scoring for the Monarchs.

Zigomanis netted his first goal of the season by re-directing defenseman Brennan Evans shot at 2:28.

Barney's second goal of the season also came on a re-direction, tying the game at 1-1 4:50 into the contest. Barney tipped defenseman Denis Grebeshkov slap shot from the left point. Kelly, back after serving a four-game suspension, also assisted on the play.

Kelly notched his second point of the period, slipping his backhanded attempt by goaltender Patrick DesRochers at 13:35. Right wing Pavel Rosa and defenseman Bryan Muir also assisted as the Monarchs took their first lead at 2-1.

But the Lock Monsters scored short-handed 60 seconds later to tie the score as Lysak raced up the boards, retrieved the loose puck, and blistered his shot over the blocker of goaltender Matt Underhill at 14:35.

The first period also featured a total of 22 minutes in penalties and a fight between Monarchs rookie right wing George Parros and Lock Monsters defenseman Joey Tetarenko at 15:12.

Tetarenko fought again 3:08 into the second period, this time matching up with Monarchs left winger Ryan Flinn. Flinn held the edge in the second bout, with Tetarenko winning the first period tilt.

The Monarchs re-gained the lead, thanks to the power play, 7:02 into the middle period as rookie left wing Noah Clarke shoved home a loose puck in the crease. Clarke took advantage when DesRochers had trouble with defenseman Richard Seeley's slap shot. Rosa earned assist number two on the night with his contribution on the play.

Right wing Robert Dome's third goal of the season again tied the game, this time at 3-3. Dome fought through traffic in the neutral zone, then raced into the Monarchs zone on a breakaway. He next froze Underhill with a stick-side fake, and then calmly flipped his shot over Underhill's glove at 8:18. Wing Matt Davidson and defenseman Mike Commodore assisted on the goal.

Barney, who registered seven game-winning goals for the Monarchs last season, netted his first this year 5:38 into the third period. Muir and Kelly assisted.

Yanick Lehoux's second goal in as many games, scored at 13:48 with right wing John Tripp assisting, iced the game for the Monarchs.

Underhill posted his first Monarchs win with 38 saves. DesRochers suffered the loss, finishing with 32 saves.

The Monarchs finished 1-for-7 on the power play. The Lock Monsters were 0-for-6 with the man-advantage.
