Glenview, Ill. - The Grand Rapids Griffins (6-3-1-0) dropped a 4-3 decision in regulation to the Chicago Wolves (6-1-1-1) on Saturday night at Allstate Arena. Grand Rapids has lost only twice in regulation in its last nine visits to the Windy City.
The Griffins, the league's sharpest-shooting team, showed a propensity for precision in the early stages of the game, scoring three goals on their first eight shots of the game.
The Griffins opened the scoring when Derek King lifted the rebound of Kevin Miller's shot from the right wing circle at 6:45 of the first period. Jeff Nelson picked up his 699th professional point on his third assist as a Griffin.
The Griffins opened a 2-0 lead when Mark Mowers found Dave Van Drunen sneaking in from his point for his first goal of the season at 8:19 of the first period. Tim Skarperud earned his first helper of the season. Mowers has points in four straight games, and seven of the last eight games.
Darryl Bootland scored a goal for the third straight game, making the score 3-0 at 11:17 of the opening frame. Hugo Boisvert assisted on the play.
The Wolves would not go away as Eric Healey netted a power play goal from Bill Lindsay, making the score 3-1 at 16:00 of the first period.
Chicago's power play struck again 38 seconds later when Stephen Baby beat Marc Lamothe making the score 3-2 from Healey and Shawn Heins.
Lindsay tied the score at 3-3 when he capitalized on a Griffins turnover at 12:52 of the second period. Karl Stewart picked up the lone assist on the play.
Brian Maloney scored the game-winning goal when he pounced on a rebound in front of Lamothe and drove it behind the Griffins' netminder 32 seconds into the third period. Stewart earning his second assist of the game on the goal.
Lamothe (2-3-1) made 31 saves in a losing effort, while Frederic Cassivi (2-1-0) stopped 29 saves for the win.
The Griffins are back in action on Wednesday night, when they host the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks at 7 p.m.
