Trenton Holds Off Portland

(Portland, ME)- Trenton Starting Pitcher Zach McAllister tossed 7 2/3 shutout innings to lift Trenton to a 5-3 win over Portland on Friday night from Hadlock Field. Trenton has now tied its season-high with four straight wins, and won 14 of its last 18 games.
Trenton (30-23) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. First baseman Kevin Smith doubled off of Portland Starting Pitcher Jarod Plummer, and advanced to third base on a single by Second baseman Justin Snyder. Smith scored on an RBI ground out by Left fielder James Cooper.
The Thunder increased the lead to 5-0 with four insurance runs in the ninth inning. With one out in the frame, Catcher Kyle Anson walked against Portland Reliever Chad Rhoades. Right fielder Edwar Gonzalez followed with a single to move Anson to second base. Smith then delivered an RBI single to score Anson and increase the lead to 2-0. Snyder followed Smith with a two-run double to extend the lead to 4-0. The final run came home on an RBI double by Cooper. Six straight batters reached in the inning, and the Thunder batted around. Gonzalez, Smith and Snyder each had two hits in the win.
Portland (27-27) scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to slice the Trenton lead to 5-3. Left fielder Aaron Bates scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the inning for the first run. Shortstop Argenis Diaz followed late in the frame with a two-run two-out double to make it 5-3. But, Thunder Reliever Amaury Sanit struck out Bubba Bell, as the tying run at the plate, for the final out of the game. Trenton had gone 26 consecutive innings without allowing a run prior to Portland's three runs in the ninth inning.
McAllister tossed a season-high 7 2/3 innings. He scattered seven hits. He struck out six and did not walk a batter. He has thrown at least seven innings in three of his last five starts. He has won three straight starts, and four of his last five. Plummer (4-2) yielded only four hits and one run over six innings, but took the loss.
Trenton continues its three-game series against Portland on Saturday night from Hadlock Field in Portland, ME. RHP Ivan Nova (4-3, 3.26) will start for Trenton against Portland LHP Felix Doubront (3-2, 3.30). Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
