New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, NH- The New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Double-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, are proud to announce this year's recipients of the Fisher Cats Foundation Scholar-Athlete Scholarships. A grand total of $30,000 was presented to a record-high 12 college-bound high school seniors: 10 from New Hampshire and, for the first time, two from Massachusetts. Each of the 12 students chosen from more than 270 applicants was awarded a $2,500 scholarship. A number of the award-winning New Hampshire students were recognized on the field prior to tonight's Fisher Cats/Reading Phillies 7:05pm game at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. The inaugural Bay State winners were recognized on the field before the Friday, May 22 game vs the Trenton Thunder.
The monies for the scholarships were raised from November's charitable Granite State Baseball Dinner and through proceeds from 50-50 raffles held at Fisher Cats home games. The scholarships were made possible by the Fisher Cats Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to bettering the lives of our youth by supporting Children's Hospital at Dartmouth (CHaD) and providing annual scholarships to New Hampshire and Massachusetts high school seniors.
"In addition to the 10 New Hampshire students we annually recognize with these scholarships, it gives us great pleasure to add two well-deserving Massachusetts students, Angelica Gonzalez and Matthew Gordon, to our list of outstanding award winners for the first time," said Fisher Cats owner and chairman of the Fisher Cats Foundation board Art Solomon. "With a record number of qualified applicants, it was again a very difficult process to select this year's scholarship recipients. Congratulations to our 2009 New Hampshire Scholar-Athlete Scholarship winners Ashley Andrew, Kortney Dorow, Elizabeth Dutton, Emma Erler, Eric Jensen, Jessica Lachance, Joshua Ramos, Anne Rynearson, Derrick Sylvester and George Weigold."
