Bowie Baysox News Release
BOWIE, Md. - The Baysox bats were unable to muster any offense against Luis Marte, falling to Erie 3-0 as they opened up a four-game series at Prince George's Stadium. It was the third consecutive night the Baysox were held scoreless, they also committed four errors for the second straight game as they fall to 26-27 on the season.
The SeaWolves got on the board in the first inning off Baysox starter Sean Gleason. Andy Dirks walked to start the game, advancing to third on an error by shortstop Robert Valido one batter later. Ryan Strieby brought him home with a groundout to second as Erie took a 1-0 lead. The RBI was Strieby's 43rd of the season, tops in the Eastern League.
Gleason ran into trouble again in the fifth as Deik Scram singled up the middle to start the inning off the Baysox right-hander. Scram stole second and would up at third when second baseman Miguel Abreu missed the throw from catcher Guillermo Rodriguez. After Shawn Roof went down swinging, Dirks followed with an RBI single. He also stole second, winding up at third when Rodriguez's throw skipped into center field. Dirks came around to score on a single by Brennan Boesch to put Erie ahead by three.
Marte held firm with a three-run lead, striking out six on his way to his fourth win of the season. The Baysox did get a boost from first baseman Brandon Snyder, who returned to the lineup after missing the last four games with a back injury. He finished the night 1-4 with an opposite field double in the fourth inning, but was not enough as the Baysox failed to string hits together and put a run on the board.
"It's just one of those things, that's baseball," Snyder said of the team's recent struggles. "It just takes one or two guys to get hot and that's what we need."
The Baysox have been held scoreless over their last 27.0 innings, collecting only 13 hits while committing 11 errors. They have also struggled to get hits in the clutch, going 0-23 with runners in scoring position during their current three-game losing skid.
"When you put pressure on yourself you can't do anything right," said hitting coach Moe Hill. "That's why they're called slumps."
One bright spot for the Baysox was the performance of the bullpen. Ryan Ouellette worked 3.0 hitless innings in relief of Gleason. The right-hander has posted a 1.26 ERA in 14.1 innings of work since being called up from Frederick on May 14. Josh Perrault came on to work a scoreless ninth, striking out two of the three hitters he faced.
The Baysox will look to get back on track tomorrow night as RHP John Mariotti (0-3, 3.90) takes the mound in search of his first Baysox win. Erie will counter with RHP Pat Stanley (0-0, 2.38), who makes his third start of the season. Game time is set for 7:05. Fans are encouraged to don the apparel of their favorite hero as the Baysox celebrate Superhero Night at Prince George's Stadium. Children's rock band Milkshake will be on hand performing a pre-game concert Tickets for the concert are $10 and include a general admission seat to that night's game.
