Connecticut Defenders News Release

BINGHAMTON, NY- A late rally for the Defenders (30-24) saw them surpass the Binghamton B-Mets by the final of 8-4 for a game one win Friday night at NYSEG Stadium.

SS-Brandon Crawford's suicide squeeze on the first base side plated CF-Mike McBryde to give the Defenders their first lead of the ballgame in the eighth inning and they never looked back as they picked up their second straight victory.

The B-Mets wasted no time getting to Defender's starter, RHP-Jesse English as they plated two runs in their first trip to the dish. C-Josh Thole drove in the first run with a sac fly to center and 3B-Shawn Bowman delivered an RBI double with two outs to give Binghamton the early advantage.

The Defenders trimmed into the lead in the fourth when a CF-Mike McBryde drew a leadoff walk then raced to third on a throwing error by B-Mets starter, RHP- Brad Holt, who made his double-A debut. McBryde eventually scored on a Crawford RBI single.

In the fifth, LF-Bobby Felmy ripped a leadoff double and advanced to third on a C-Tyler LaTorre groundout to second. Felmy tied the game on a wild pitch by Holt that sailed to the backstop.

The tie ballgame was short lived as Binghamton responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning on a pair of RBI doubles by LF-Lucas Duda and RF-Carl Loadenthal, B-Mets lead 4-2.

Connecticut received a two out RBI single by LaTorre in the seventh to score Crawford and trim the lead to one before LaTorre was gunned down on a 9,4,2 relay as Loadenthal recovered after committing an error on pinch hitter Mike Mooney's shot to right.

The Defenders rattled off their biggest inning in the eighth. A leadoff single by 2B-Brock Bond then McBryde reached on a SS-Ruben Tejada fielding error but the next pitch was a wild pitch allowing Bond to tie the game at four. McBryde gave the Defenders the lead on Crawford's squeeze bunt but an RBI single by RF-Eddy Martinez-Esteve and RBI double by Felmy grew the lead to 7-4.

Joe Paterson fired a 1,2,3 ninth inning for his sixth save of the year as reliever, RHP-Dan Griffin (3-4) picked up his third win of the season tossing one scoreless inning allowing two hits, walked one and struck out one.

Jesse English allowed two earned runs off of five hits, walked two and struck out four in the no decision for the Defenders. The B-Mets Holt fired 6.1 solid innings, allowed three runs-two earned off of two hits, walked three and fanned three in his debut en route to the no decision.

Connecticut and Binghamton will play a double header tomorrow starting at 5:05pm from NYSEG Stadium. In game one, Defenders RHP-Daryl Maday (2-2) will face RHP-Jenrry Mejia who will make his double-A debut. Game two has RHP-Mike Antonini (4-1) tossing for Binghamton against a TBA for Connecticut.
