Trenton Falls to Connecticut

(Trenton, NJ)- Connecticut First baseman Brett Pill had three hits and two RBI to lift the Defenders to a 7-4 win over Trenton on Wednesday night from Waterfront Park. Trenton dropped back to the .500 mark (32-32) with the loss.

Trenton took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-out RBI single by Catcher Jesus Montero. The Thunder had three consecutive two-out hits in the first inning. Connecticut tallied three runs in the top of the second inning to take a 3-1 lead. Left fielder Mike Mooney connected on a two-out three-run home run to put the Defenders on top. Trenton responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the second inning. Third baseman Marcos Vechionacci tripled to lead off the frame against Connecticut Starting Pitcher Henry Sosa (6-0). Left fielder Justin Snyder followed with a sacrifice fly RBI to slice the lead to 3-2. Center fielder Austin Krum walked and then moved to third base on a double by Second baseman Reegie Corona. Shortstop Eduardo Nunez followed with a two-run double to put the Thunder back on top 4-3. Nunez finished the game 2 x 4 with a run, double, and two RBI. But, Connecticut (37-28) would score three runs in the top of third inning to re-take the lead. The Defenders tied the game at 4-4 on an RBI single by First baseman Brett Pill. Pill scored the go-ahead run on a two-out error by Vechionacci. Pill finished the game 3 x 5 with a run, and two RBI. A balk by Nova forced in the final run of the inning. Pill added an RBI double in the top of the ninth inning to increase Connecticut's lead to 7-4.

Nova (5-4) allowed eight hits and six runs (one earned) in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out three and walked two. The loss was Nova's first since May 17th. He had been 3-0 in his prior four starts. Sosa scattered six hits and four runs in five innings to notch the win. He struck out two and walked two. Three Connecticut relievers combined to pitch the final 3 2/3 innings without allowing a run. Connecticut Reliever Joe Paterson pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his seventh save of the season. Trenton had only one hit after the second inning.

Trenton and Connecticut wrap up their three-game series on Thursday night.
