Akron RubberDucks News Release

MANCHESTER, NH - Akron continued its recent scorching play Wednesday night, taking both games of a doubleheader from New Hampshire by finals of 6-3 in game one and 4-3 in game two. The Aeros improved to 43-21 with the victories, moving 22 games over .500 for the first time this season while the Fisher Cats fell to 28-38. Akron has now won five straight games and 10 of its last 12.

The Aeros claimed a back-and-forth affair in game one, striking for two runs in the sixth to take the lead for good. Jerad Head started the rally with a leadoff single, and New Hampshire reliever Rommie Lewis walked three straight hitters to force in a run and tie the game at 3-3. Matt McBride then greeted former Aero Bubbie Buzachero with an RBI single to left-center, scoring Carlos Santana and putting Akron ahead to stay. Nick Weglarz provided the final margin with a two-run homer in the seventh.

Jeanmar Gomez (6-2) earned the win with a quality start, working around eight hits and two walks to allow only three runs in six innings. Lewis (1-4) blew the save and took the loss, while Vinnie Pestano closed it out for his league-leading 18th save. Weglarz, Beau Mills, and McBride all drove in two runs in the opener.

Akron never trailed in the nightcap, as Armando Camacaro laced a two-run single to left-center with two down in the second to put the Aeros in front 2-0. New Hampshire cut the lead in half with a run in the fifth, but three straight doubles from Head, Weglarz, and Santana in the sixth gave the Aeros a 4-1 advantage. Those insurance runs would loom large in the bottom of the inning, as Brian Dopirak launched a two-run homer to turn it back into a one-run game. Adam Calderone then reached on an error to put the tying run on base, but Zach Putnam recovered to start a 1-6-3 double play to get out of the sixth and then didn't allow a ball out of the infield in the seventh.

Josh Judy (1-2) was the winner in game two, although special mention should be given to spot-starter Carlton Smith who turned in three shutout innings and has now worked 9.2 consecutive scoreless frames over his last four appearances. Adrian Martin (0-1) suffered the loss for the Fisher Cats, and Putnam got the final six outs for his first save. Camacaro finished 3-3 while Santana was 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Mills had hits in both games to stretch his hitting streak to nine games, while John Drennen had a hit in game one but went 0-3 in game two, and his hitting streak ended at nine games.

The Aeros will look for the sweep in this four-game series Thursday night at 7:05 p.m., with left-hander Ryan Edell (2-0, 2.45 ERA) going for Akron against fellow southpaw Marc Rzepczynski (7-5, 3.10 ERA). The Aeros are looking for their first four-game sweep since July 4th-7th of last year at Binghamton. The game broadcast begins at 6:50 p.m. on SportsRadio 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com.
