New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release

Manchester, NH- Adam Calderone matched a career high by smashing his ninth home run, a tie-breaking solo blast in the bottom of the fifth inning that staked New Hampshire to a 3-2 lead, but the Akron Aeros answered with a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh innings to top the Fisher Cats, 6-3, in the opening game of a twi-night doubleheader on Wednesday night at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. In the nightcap, Brian Dopirak moved into a tie for the Eastern League lead with his 14th home run, a two-run blast in the sixth inning, but the Aeros held on to complete the sweep, 4-3.

In the opener, New Hampshire claimed a 2-0 lead against winning pitcher Jeanmar Gomez in the bottom of the second on back-to-back RBI doubles from Cody Haerther (1-for-3, 2B, RBI, R) and Luis Sanchez (1-for-3, 2B, RBI).

Akron tied the game, 2-2, in the fourth against Randy Boone on Beau Mills' run-scoring single and a sacrifice fly by Matt McBride (2-for-2, 2B, SF, 2 RBI).

Calderone (2-for-4, HR) snapped the deadlock in the fifth by ripping Gomez's 1-1 pitch over the access road in right for a short-lived 3-2 Fisher Cats' advantage.

Following Jerod Head's leadoff single off Boone in the top of the sixth, losing pitcher Rommie Lewis (1-4) entered the game and walked all three batters he faced, forcing in a run when Mills (1-for-3, BB, 2 RBI) drew a free pass with the bases loaded, tying the game, 3-3. McBride broke the tie with a deep single off reliever Bubbie Buzachero, scoring Nick Weglarz for a 4-3 Aeros' lead.

Weglarz (2-for-3, HR, BB, 3 R, 2 RBI) capped the scoring with his eighth homer, a two-out, two-run shot off Buzachero in the seventh.

Gomez (6-2) allowed three runs on eight hits in six innings to earn the win. The right-hander fanned five and walked two.

Vinnie Pestano worked around a single to Scott Campbell (2-for-3, BB) and a walk to Brad Emaus (1-for-3, BB) in the bottom of the seventh to close it out for his Eastern League-leading 18th save.

In game two, Akron (43-21) jumped out to a 2-0 lead against losing pitcher Adrian Martin in the top of the second on a two-out, two-run single to center by Armando Camacaro (3-for-3, 2 RBI), scoring Carlos Santana (single) and Mills (double).

New Hampshire (28-38) got one back in the home half of the fifth against winning pitcher Josh Judy when Nick Gorneault (1-for-3, 2B, R) doubled and scored on Bryan Kervin's single, giving Kervin (1-for-2, RBI) his first career Eastern League RBI.

The Aeros increased the lead to 4-1 in the top of the sixth when Head (1-for-4, 2B, R), Weglarz (1-for-3, 2B, R, RBI) and Santana (2-for-3, 2B, RBI, R) hit consecutive doubles off Edgar Estanga.

Dopirak tagged a Zach Putnam offering over the rightfield wall with Todd Donovan (2-for-2, BB, SB, R) aboard, trimming the deficit to 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth.

Putnam shook off the long ball to record his first career professional save, allowing two runs on two hits in two innings. The right-hander fanned two.

Judy (1-2) yielded one run on three hits in two innings of relief, striking out two in the win.

Martin (0-1) suffered his first defeat after giving up two runs on three hits in four innings of work.

The Fisher Cats and the Aeros wrap up their four-game series on Thursday night at 7:05pm when New Hampshire left-hander Marc Rzepczynski (7-5, 3.10) pitches against Akron lefty Ryan Edell (2-0, 2.45). Radio coverage begins at 6:45pm with the BayRing Pre-Game Show on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Mike Murphy.
