
Toronto's 2008 Double-A MVP Returns to Fisher Cats

Manchester, NH- The Toronto Blue Jays, parent club of the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats, today transferred infielder Scott Campbell from Advanced-A Dunedin of the Florida State League to the Fisher Cats' roster. Campbell, the Blue Jays 2008 R. Howard Webster Award Winner as the organization's top Double-A player in New Hampshire, is in the Fisher Cats' starting lineup for tonight's 6:05pm opening game of a twi-night doubleheader against the Akron Aeros at Merchantsauto.com Stadium.
Campbell, 24, batted .302 with 9 home runs and 46 RBI in 112 games for the Fisher Cats last season. In 2008, the Auckland, New Zealand, native started for the World Team at the XM Satellite Radio All-Star Futures Game at Yankee Stadium and started for the Northern Division at the Northeast Delta Dental Eastern League All-Star Game at Merchantsauto.com Stadium in the same week. He was named the EL's post-season All-Star second baseman after ranking ninth in AVG. (.302) and sixth in OBP (.398). He also led the Fisher Cats in hits (126), runs (70) and walks (66).
The Blue Jays originally selected Campbell in the 10th round of the 2006 draft out of Gonzaga University, making him the first native of New Zealand ever drafted by a Major League team.
In 2009, Campbell began the year at Triple-A Las Vegas of the Pacific Coast League, batting .229 with 0 HR and 6 RBI in 27 games, primarily as a third baseman. Following a stint on the disabled list, he played in five games with Dunedin, batting .500 (10-for-20).
To make room for Campbell on the Fisher Cats' roster, Toronto released infielder Chris Gutierrez. In other transactions, right-handed starting pitcher Marty McLeary, who went 0-1 with a 4.26 ERA in five starts for the 2008 Fisher Cats, was activated from the disabled list today. The former Pittsburgh Pirate, who has yet to pitch this season, takes the active roster spot of fellow right-hander Rey Gonzalez, who goes on the 7-day Disabled List, retroactive to Monday, June 15. Fisher Cats' first baseman David Cooper also went on the 7-day Disabled List, retroactive to Monday, June 15.
