Trejo Slam Not Enough to Rescue Goats

Hartford Yard Goats News Release

HARTFORD- Alan Trejo's grand slam was not enough to rescue the Hartford Yard Goats, as Portland rallied for a 7-6 win Monday night, before 3,994 at Dunkin' Donuts Park.

The Yard Goats loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning against reliever Andrew Schwaab, who settled down to retire the last two battles and save the game for Matthew Kent. It was Hartford's third straight loss.

The Yard Goats were paced by Colton Welker's two doubles, single, RBI and two runs scored. Welker has 10 hits in his last 18 at bats. Trejo added a bunt single to his slam and had four RBI.

Portland (7-12) jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a home run by lefty hitter Brett Netzer that left the ballpark in right field and an RBI-single by Tate Matheny. However, Hartford (11-14) rallied for five runs in its half of the first off of Red Sox pitching prospect Darwinzon Hernandez, who pitched for Boston last week. A walk, a run-scoring double by Welker, two more walks and Trejo's grand slam led to Hernandez' demise. The southpaw was pulled after striking out the next batter, having thrown 34 pitches.

The Sea Dogs came back against Yard Goats starter Ty Culbreth in the second inning on a two-run homer by Marcus Wilson - acquired from Arizona for Blake Swihart - and a sacrifice fly by C.J. Chatham in the fifth. Hartford recaptured the lead in the fifth on a Welker double and a two-out single by Vince Fernandez off of Kent, who allowed the Yard Goats just one run in 5.1 innings in relief of Hernandez. Portland rallied in the sixth against reliever Heath Holder, taking the lead for good on run-scoring singles by Netzer and Bobby Dalbec.

Colorado Rockies catcher Chris Iannetta, on a rehab assignment with Hartford, went 0-for-3 in his five-inning appearance.

Game two of the three-game series is Tuesday at 7:05 PM. RH Rico Garcia will pitch for Hartford against LH Kyle Hart for Portland. The game will be broadcast on News Radio 1410AM, on 100.9 FM, in Spanish on 1120AM and on the Internet on newsradio1410.iheart.com and on MiLB.com.
