Sens Survive R-Phils Scare

(Reading, PA) - After a come-from-behind win against the Fisher Cats on Sunday, the R-Phils rolled into Monday with the hottest team in baseball coming to America's Classic Ballpark. For the third straight meeting, the Senators struck first and had to hold on late as the Fightins battled into the later innings. A three-run seventh was highlighted by Mickey Moniak's second triple in as many days, but Jackson Tetreault lasted longer than Adonis Medina, who suffered his first loss 7-5.

The Senators went right to work in the first inning, getting a leadoff single from Luis Garcia and a home run from Chuck Taylor that made it 2-0 two batters in. Drew Ward added a double with one out, and after a groundout got him to third base, Medina balked in the third run of the inning.

Tetreault walked Henri Lartigue on four pitches to give Reading its first baserunner with one out in the second. A wild pitch pushed the catcher to second, and a Josh Stephen single got through to cut the deficit to 3-1. The Sens came right back in the third inning, loading the bases via a hit batter, walk, and infield single from Tyler Goeddel. Needing one more out to end the threat, Medina sawed off Bryan Mejia, who dunked a single into right that scored a pair and put the Senators back in front 5-1.

In the home fifth, Arquimedes Gamboa led off with a triple to dead center for his first extra-base hit of the season. Raul Rivas scored him with a sacrifice fly, but Tetreault (1-0) finished the inning, throwing 87 pitches while allowing just three hits and three walks with four strikeouts.

Garrett Cleavinger delivered his finest Double-A appearance after Medina (0-1) exited with two outs in the fourth. The lefthander poured in two-and-a-third innings of long relief, allowing just one hit and a walk while striking out the last five batters he faced. For the seventh and eighth, the R-Phils turned to Luis Ramirez, who was called up from Extended Spring Training for his Double-A debut.

Harrisburg scored a run in the seventh on a two-out double from catcher Tres Barrera and a subsequent single from Rhett Wiseman. They'd score their seventh and final run in the eighth when Ramirez loaded the bases with no outs. All things considered, the righthander didn't let the inning get away from him, allowing just the one run on a groundout from Ward.

Reading's resilience reached a crescendo in the bottom of the seventh against lefthander Taylor Guilbeau, who struck out a pair in a 1-2-3 sixth inning. With two outs, Rivas served a double into right for his second hit, and Austin Bossart scored him with a single back up the middle in his first at-bat after a double switch. A walk to Luke Williams put a couple of runners on base, and Moniak scored them both with a hard triple into the right field corner. The R-Phils only baserunner after that came on a Grenny Cumana infield single in the eighth, but the comeback fell short with James Bourque locking up his fifth save by throwing the last two innings.
