Asheville Tourists News Release

SAVANNAH, GA-- Thursday night in Savannah was a long night for both the Asheville Tourists and the Savannah Sand Gnats. The two teams engaged in a double-header that featured a one hour twenty-six minute rain delay, an extra-inning affair, and both teams coming away with a win. The Sand Gnats took game one 4-3 in eight innings while the Tourists emerged in game two with a 4-1 win.

Sam Howard started game one for the Tourists and faced off against Scarlyn Reyes of the Sand Gnats. Asheville held the lead 3-2 in the middle of the fifth when the umpires decided to put the tarp on the field anticipating the rain. Ten minutes later the skies opened up and forced the delay. Howard was unable to return to the game due to the length of the delay and Vicente Lupo's Home Run following the stoppage knotted the game 3-3.

The score remained tied through regulation but the bottom of the eighth the home team stuck. Patrick Biondi reached on an error to begin the frame. He promptly stole second, went to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on Luis Guillorme's walk-off single through the Tourists drawn in infield.

In game two the Gnats plated a run in the bottom of the first inning without recording a hit. In the second Joe Tuschak singled to lead off the inning but Asheville's Blake Shouse left him stranded on base. That was Savannah's only hit of the game.

The Tourists leveled the score in the third when Omar Carrizales scored on Roberto Ramos' two-out single to right. Asheville took the lead in the next inning with an RBI single by Ryan Stephens that plated Jairo Rosario. The score remained 2-1 until the top of the seventh. Luis Jean singled home Robbie Perkins and later in the inning Josh Fuentes worked a bases loaded walk.

The biggest story of the second game was Asheville's pitching. Shouse, who is typically a reliever, went three innings. John Sheehan followed with two perfect innings pitched. Then it was Yoely Bello who turned in a perfect frame. Finally, Josh Michalec slammed the door shut with a one, two, three seventh inning; notching his 20th save of the season.

The Tourists ended up winning the series two games to one and continue their road trip with a 7:05pm game in Greenville on Friday night.
