Charleston RiverDogs News Release
SAVANNAH, Ga. -- After losing both games of Thursday's doubleheader against the Rome Braves, the Charleston RiverDogs responded by defeating the Savannah Sand Gnats 6-2 in the series opener at Historic Grayson Stadium.
Charleston (9-13 second half, 43-49 overall) jumped on the board early with three first-inning runs. Isaias Tejeda stepped in with the bases loaded capitalized with a two-run single with one out, which brought home Ryan Lindemuth and Vince Conde. After an Alexander Palma pop out, Tejeda stole second while Jorge Mateo swiped home to put the RiverDogs up 3-0.
In the top of the fourth, Vince Conde hit his second home run of the road trip. The two-run blast extended Charleston's lead to 5-0.
Savannah (7-14, 46-45) got on the board thanks to a throwing error by the catcher Radley Haddad. Wuilmer Becerra struck out swinging, but Haddad threw the ball away from the first baseman Tejeda attempting to throw Becerra out to retire the side. Tyler Moore and Jonathan Johnson both scored to cut the RiverDogs' lead to 5-2.
Palma increased the RiverDogs lead to 6-2 with an RBI single that drove in a run and added insurance to Charleston's advantage. Mateo cruised home from second on the single to left and tallied his second run of the game.
Joey Maher threw four scoreless innings in the start for the RiverDogs. Chance Adams (1-0) earned his first win with Charleston, only allowing one hit in 2 2/3 innings pitched, while striking out five. Corey Oswalt (6-4) gave up five of the six R'Dogs runs and took the loss for Savannah.
Charleston started strong and got 11 of its 12 hits in the first four innings. The pitching staff was dominant and did not allow an earned run in the game. Both Savannah runs scored on Haddad's throwing error in the fifth.
