
Tourists Outlast Sand Gnats to Split Doubleheader Thursday

Savannah, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats and the Asheville Tourists split a doubleheader at Historic Grayson Stadium on a soggy Thirsty Thursday that spilled into Friday morning. The Gnats won the opening game 4-3, while the Tourists picked up the win, 4-1, in the second game which started at 10:10 pm.
The Gnats (7-13/46-44) won the opening game in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the eighth inning. Centerfielder Patrick Biondi began the inning by reaching on an error, then stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Shortstop Luis Guillorme drove Biondi home with the winning run with a ground ball single through the right side of a drawn-in infield for a 4-3 win.
The Tourists (13-7/45-45) used four relievers to combine to hold the Gnats to one hit in a 4-1 win in game two. The Gnats scored their only run in the first when second baseman Jonathan Johnson walked and came around on third baseman Eudor Garcia's sacrifice fly. Asheville evened the game at 1-1 in the third and took a 2-1 lead against starter Michael Gibbons in the fourth.
In his second start, with the Gnats, Gibbons allowed two runs on six hits in his six innings, but fell to 0-2 with the loss.
Asheville added two runs after midnight against reliever Dawrin Frias to complete the night and the morning's scoring.
The Sand Gnats welcome the Charleston RiverDogs on Friday for a four-game series. Savannah will start RHP Corey Oswalt (6-3, 3.50), while the 'Dogs will send RHP Joey Maher (0-2, 1.64) to the mound.
