Hickory Crawdads News Release
Hickory, NC - The hot-hitting Hickory Crawdads lineup took their recent surge to an all-new level Friday night, as the 'Dads bats set a new season-high with 12 runs scored in a 12-1 win over the Augusta GreenJackets in front of 3,123 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium.
All nine batters in the Hickory lineup produced at least one hit, with the club's 16 hits tying a season-best and extending the offense's streak of double digit hit games to five straight. Center fielder Jose Cardona led the explosive attack, going 4-5 with 4 RBI, 3 runs scored, and a triple. Carlos Arroyo (2-5, 2B, 2 RBI), Luke Tendler (2-5, 2B 2 R), Jairo Beras (2-4, RBI, R) and Juremi Profar (2-4, RBI, 2 R) all enjoyed multi-hit nights as well.
The Crawdads pitching staff nearly came away with their eighth shutout of the year, with Yohander Mendez, Ariel Jurado, and Joe Filomeno combining to hold the GreenJackets to one run on 9 hits while striking out 10 total batters.
Augusta starting pitcher Mark Reyes entered the night leading the South Atlantic League with a 1.66 ERA, but the 'Dads jumped on the right-hander for a run in the 1st on a leadoff single by Cardona and an eventual RBI sacrifice fly from Eduard Pinto for an early 1-0 lead. The score quickly took off from there, as the Crawdads plated four runs in the 2nd and 6 in the 3rd for an 11-0 advantage.
Tendler started the 2nd with a leadoff single to right, but two outs later he was still standing at second base. Rock Shoulders drove in the first run of the frame with an RBI single to right, before a base knock from Profar and a 2-RBI triple by Cardona plated two more tallies. Cardona eventually scored on a fielding error by the 'Jackets first baseman for the final run of the inning.
The 3rd frame began with two quick outs for Reyes as he looked to settle into the game, but the next seven consecutive 'Dads reached base to break the game open. Tendler lined a 2-out double to right-center and Jose Trevino walked before Beras lined an RBI single to left. After a walk to Shoulders that loaded the bases, Profar brought home Trevino with an infield, RBI hit. Cardona followed with a 2-RBI base knock to left while Arroyo roped a 2-RBI double down the left field line to stretch Hickory's lead to 11.
The Crawdads picked up their final run in the 6th, when Josh Morgan connected on a solo home run to left for his third long ball of the year and a 12-0 'Dads lead. The GreenJackets lone tally came two innings later on an infield single by Travious Relaford and an RBI double from Jonah Arenado to make the score 12-1 in the 8th. Jurado quickly regained control of the frame as he struck out the side before Filomeno tossed a scoreless 9th to finish off the Crawdads 12-1 win.
Mendez (2-1) earned the win for Hickory with five shutout innings on four hits, two walks, and four strikeouts. Reyes (4-4) took the loss for Augusta after being roughed up for 10 runs on nine hits, two walks, and a strikeout over his 2.2 innings pitched.
The Crawdads (55-35/11-11) and GreenJackets (44-47/11-11) will play again Saturday night, with first pitch for game two of the 4-game series scheduled for 7:00 pm.
