Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (July 17, 2015)- The Kannapolis Intimidators used a grand slam by John Ziznewski in the second inning and held on to beat the Hagerstown Suns, 5-2, Friday night at Intimidators Stadium Supported by Carolinas HealthCare system. The Intimidators are now 11-11 in the second half and 46-45 on the season.
Yency Almonte earned the win (7-4), working 7.0 scoreless innings, allowing one hit while walking three and striking out three. Almonte completed his sixth quality start of the season after getting out of a basses loaded jam in the first, in which he walked one and hit two batters.
With the bases loaded in the second, John Ziznewski cranked his first professional home run (1) over the right-center field wall, to give the Intimidators a 4-0 lead. Ziznewski, a 2014 eighth round pick by the White Sox out of the Long Island University, was the 2014 Northeast conference player of the year, batting .365 with nine home runs and 55 RBI as a senior.
In the fifth, Kannapolis added to its lead when Louie Lechich singled home Eddy Alvarez, to make it 5-0.
The Suns plated two run in the eighth inning, but any sort of comeback was ended when Matt Cooper retired the side in order in the ninth. Cooper earned the save (8), working 1.0 inning, allowing no runs, no hits, while striking out two.
The Intimidators and Suns continue their four-game series Saturday starting 6:05 p.m. at Intimidators Stadium supported by Carolinas HealthCare System. Zach Thompson (2-4, 4.44) gets the start against fellow right-hander Drew Van Orden (5-2, 2.92). Saturday is the much-anticipated Faith & Family Night featuring a post-game concert with Grammy-nominated Sanctus Real. Tickets are just $12 for reserved seating and $10 general admission.
