Asheville Tourists News Release
GREENVILLE, SC-- It did not take the Greenville Drive long to continue their offensive outpouring that has been going on throughout the last week. They plated a total of eight runs in the first two innings to put the visiting Asheville Tourists in a deep hole. The Drive withstood a couple of Tourists rallies throughout the game and ended up with a 14-8 win.
Asheville, who did not arrive to Greenville until 6:00am that morning, played tired. Offensively, the Tourists had a productive game. They finished with 16 hits and consistently applied pressure to the Drive's pitching staff. However, the early deficit was too much to overcome.
The Tourists jumped out to a 2-0 lead when Roberto Ramos doubled in a pair in the top of the first inning. The Drive used a four-run first to take a 4-2 lead. Asheville's starting pitcher Helmis Rodriguez issued two walks and hit a batter all with the bases loaded. In the second, Rodriguez issued another bases loaded free pass and hit two more batters. The Drive tallied another four in the frame.
Trailing 8-2, the Tourists made the game interesting with a four-run fourth inning. They received RBI base hits from Yonathan Daza and Max George while Omar Carrizales added an RBI groundout. Greenville manufactured a run in the home half of the fourth but Asheville countered with one in the fifth.
With the score 9-7, the Tourists put runners at first and third with no outs in the top of the sixth. A caught stealing and two pop outs ended the threat. The Drive responded with another four-spot in the bottom of the sixth; this time it was a two-out rally that consisted of a Home Run, a double, two singles, and a Tourists error.
The Drive added an unearned run in the eighth but Asheville did make things interesting again in the ninth. Ryan Stephens plated a run with a single and Asheville had the bases loaded with no outs. However, a strikeout and a double-play ended the game.
Asheville outhit Greenville 16 to 10 but the Drive ended up with the six-run victory. Rodriguez only lasted 1.1 innings in his shortest outing of the season. Ryan Castellani will hope to stem the tide when he takes the mound for the Tourists on Saturday night.
