Asheville Tourists News Release

The Asheville Tourists bounced back Friday night with a 9-4 win over the Hickory Crawdads. The victory made it four wins in the Tourists last five games. Asheville tallied 11 hits and saw their opponents commit four costly errors.

Hickory started the game hot with a pair of runs in the first inning. Chris Grayson doubled in the first run of the game and later scored on a single from Hanser Alberto. Asheville responded immediately to the early deficit.

Jared Simon led off the second with a single and Tyler Massey doubled off the right field wall. With runners at second and third, Ryan Casteel grounded out to second; plating Simon. Rosell Herrera then grounded to Luis Sardinas, but Hickory's shortstop threw the ball away allowing Massey score. Delta Cleary Jr. followed with an RBI single and put the Tourists in front 3-2. Asheville never relinquished their lead.

The Tourists put together an impressive two-out rally in the fifth. David Kandilas singled to right and then Sam Mende lined a ball past Grayson in right. The play was ruled a single along with an error, but it ended with Kandilas scoring and Mende at third. Harold Riggins then doubled to deep center scoring Mende. Simon ended the rally with a towering Home Run to left, knocking Hickory's starting pitcher Jerad Eickhoff (1-1, 4.66) out of the game. The Tourists led 7-2 once the inning was complete.

Hickory was able to put two runs on the board in the top of the fifth, but the Tourists limited the Crawdads the rest of the way and tacked on two runs in the top of the ninth. Story led off the inning with a Home Run, and Hickory's fourth error of the game led to the Tourists final run.

Dan Winkler (1-1, 10.38) threw the first five innings for Asheville en route to earning his first win of the campaign. Craig Bennigson, Ken Roberts, and Nelson Gonzalez combined to throw four shutout innings in relief of Winkler.

The Tourists are now 1-1 on their current seven-game road trip and 5-4 on the year.
