POWER REPLAY: West Virginia opened it's 2012 home schedule with a 5-1 victory against Greenville. Alen Hanson gave the Power a 1-0 lead with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first. The Drive tied it in the second on a single, two-base error, and sac fly by Boss Moanaroa. Greg Polanco provided the next three runs with a solo home run and a two-run single in the third and fourth innings, respectively. The final West Virginia run came in the eighth on a Josh Bell RBI double. Matt Benedict pitched five innings for the win.
STOPPED AT FIVE: The Power snapped a five game losing streak with last night's win over the Drive. West Virginia was outscored 41-24 during that stretch despite only being outhit 54-48.
START ME UP: Alen Hanson's first inning home run was the first leadoff homer by a Power player in nearly two years. Evan Chambers was the last person to leadoff a game for West Virginia with a home run on May 29, 2010 against Hickory.
DRIVE ON IN: West Virginia and Greenville did not play at all during the 2011 season and are meeting for the first time since late April/ early May of 2010. The Drive won six of eight games in 2010, including three of four in Charleston. Greenville's success in 2010 tied the all-time series at 18 wins apiece, though West Virginia regained control with last night's win. Drive pitcher Yeiper Castillo is the only player on either roster who appeared in either of the 2010 series between the clubs.
TOO MANY FREE PASSES: West Virginia pitchers have combined to walk 41 batters over the first eight games of the2012 season (an average of 5.13 per game). In 2011, Power pitchers walked 43 batters during the entire month of April spanning 22 games (an average of 1.95 per game).
NEW SKIPPER FOR THE NEW SEASON: West Virginia will be run by a new face in 2012. Rick Sofield takes over as manager this season in his return to professional baseball. Sofield served as the Pirates Minor League Coordinator in 2002 but spent the last five years helping build the baseball program at the University of South Carolina-Beaufort from scratch. Former manager Gary Robinson was promoted to a professional scouting position with Pittsburgh.
STREAKS STOPPED: Jodaneli Carvajal's hitting streak was snapped at five games after an 0-3 Tuesday night. The infielder has played each game this season and has eight hits in 22 at bats. Jose Osuna's hitting streak was stopped at four games with an 0-5 performance on Tuesday. Junior Sosa and Alen Hanson have the longest active streaks at four straight games each.
PROMO UPDATE- APRIL 27: The Power will host a Charlies Reunion Night on April 17 at Appalachian Power Park. Former Charleston Charlies like Kent Tekulve, Steve Blass, and Dave Parker will be in attendance for the game and will sign autographs. A commemorative Charlies giveaway will also be handed out to the fans in attendance.
POWER POINTS: Copies of the 2012 Media Guide are available upon request... Greg Polanco has hit home runs in back-to-back games. Dan Grovatt was the last player to accomplish this feat (August 2011)
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh fell 3-2 at Los Angeles. Mike McKenry hit a solo home run in the Bucco loss... Indianapolis dropped a 5-4 final at Columbus... Altoona lost 7-3 at Richmond. Bradenton lost 1-0 at Fort Myers. Eliecer Navarro surrendered the game's lone run in the sixth inning and took the loss.
