CHARLESTON, SC - A late rally came up just short as the Charleston RiverDogs fell 9-4 to the Rome Braves in front of 3,185 fans at State Mutual Stadium on Friday night. Charleston is now to 5-3 on the year in the South Atlantic League, while Rome advances to 2-6 with the win.

RiverDogs Manager Carlos Mendoza used 4 pitchers in the game getting 2 innings each out of Bryan Mitchell, Dan Mahoney, Zack Varce, and Ben Paullus. Bryan Mitchell (0-1) got the start for the RiverDogs and got tagged with the loss after 2 innings in which he allowed 2 runs on only 1 hit, but walked 6 and struck out 1. In all, RiverDogs pitchers walked 13 batters in the game.

Cito Culver was 3-5 in the game with 3 singles, an RBI, and a stolen base for Charleston. Tyler Austin got the start at 1B for the first this season and smacked a double and a triple scoring 2 runs in 5 at-bats. Mason Williams and Gary Sanchez also chipped in with 2 hits for the RiverDogs.

Rome SP AJ Holland pitched 6 solid innings allowing 2 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks while striking out 4 in picking up the win to move to 1-1 on the year. William Beckwith went 3-3 at the platewith 2 walks for the Braves.

Game 3 will be on Friday night with RHP Scottie Allen (0-1, 11.25 ERA) starting for Charleston and RHP Carlos Perez (0-0, 0.00 ERA) starting for Rome. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
