Toros Provide Thrilling Win Over Erie, 121-113

Austin, TX January 19- The Austin Toros and the Erie BayHawks faced off in their first and only meeting of the season at the Austin Convention Center, with the Toros coming out on top 121-113.

The Toros fought hard in the first quarter to gain the lead after starter Alonzo Gee was forced to sit out most of the quarter due to a laceration above his left eye. Spurs assignee Malik Hairston energized the team to a 28-23 lead at the end of the quarter, scoring 10 of the last 12 points in the quarter.

BayHawks' Cedric Jackson dominated the second quarter with 14 points. It was a team effort in the quarter on the Toros side as all five starters made at least one basket. Toros had a short lead at half, 53-50. Toros Head Coach Quin Snyder was ejected with 8:08 left in the quarter after receiving back-to-back technical fouls.

Both teams came out in the third quarter determined to take the lead while exchanging basket for basket in the first three minutes. The BayHawks were able to cut the Toros lead to one at the end of the quarter, 86-85, after scoring 20 points in the paint. The Toros were able to stay alive after going to the line 18 times in the quarter and making 14 buckets.

Erie regained the lead at the start of the fourth quarter, but they were unable to maintain the lead for more than a few minutes. The lead went back and forth until the final two minutes of the game, with the Toros finishing the game on a 10-2 run.

The BayHawks had four players in double figures: Jackson 34 points (season high), Alade Aminu 22 points, Frank Tolbert 17 points, and Cliff Clinkscales 16 points. Aminu led the team in rebounds with 15. Jackson led all with 13 assists.

Adidas Player of the Game, Hairston, led the Toros with 31 points and 5 assists.

All five of the Toros starters scored at least 20 points: Hairston 31, Dwayne Jones 22, Gee 21, Bowen and Jerrells 20. Jones notched his 16th double-double of the season with 15 boards. Bowen also had a double-double after accumulating 12 rebounds.

The Toros will host the Fort Wayne Mad Ants tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m.
