January 19, 2010 - NBA G League (G League)
Austin Spurs News Release
AUSTIN, TX January 19, 2010- The Austin Toros participation in the annual NBA D-League Cares Week of Service is in full effect.
The Toros partnered with the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas, H-E-B, Randalls Food Markets, and numerous media outlets to kick off the Souper Bowl of Caring on January 13, 2010. The Souper Bowl of Caring is a nationwide movement that uses Super Bowl weekend to mobilize youth to fight hunger and poverty in local communities. Participating sponsors hope to create the largest food drive in the history of Texas. The goal is to raise 750,000 meals for Central Texans in need.
Several Toros' players participated in the Martin Luther King Jr. march that was held on Monday. The march kicked off at 9 a.m. in front of the MLK Statue on the University of Texas campus. It continued to the Capitol where thousands gathered to remember Dr. King through speeches and songs and then concluded at Huston-Tillotson University.
Tonight the Toros will host a community night, as they take on the Erie BayHawks, in which local non-profits will be able to purchase 50 tickets for $50.
Included in attendance is Child, Inc. a local non-profit with a focus on early childhood education programs. Child, Inc. has worked with several local businesses to make their program, Responsible Parenting Initiative a success. The program recognizes and rewards parents for their commitment and accountability to raising their young children responsibly. Prior to the game, the Toros will present each community partner with a commemorative, special edition basketball, signed by the Austin Toros. These partners include Ellis and Salazar North and South, Henna Chevrolet, Leif Johnson Ford, and Lexus of Austin.
Tonight's game will also feature a bean bag toss at halftime, in which all money raised will go to the United Way's Haitian relief fund. Gifts to the Disaster Fund support recovery and long-term rebuilding needs of the devastated Haitian communities.
The Toros return home for back-to-back games after a month long road trip. They will host the Erie BayHawks for the first time this season tonight at 7:30 p.m. The Fort Wayne Mad Ants will make their first trip to Austin Wednesday night for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off. For tickets call 512-236-8333.
