Bakersfield Jam News Release

(Bakersfield, Calif. - January 19, 2010) - The Bakersfield Jam filled a hole in the trade market on Tuesday afternoon, acquiring Kent State center John Edwards from the Iowa Energy in exchange for forward Justin Hawkins.

Edwards spent four seasons at Kent State, playing in two NCAA Tournaments with the Golden Flashes, including an appearance in the 2002 Elite Eight. As a senior in 2003-04, John averaged 13.2 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game, and was named MAC Defensive Player of the Year.

"John will bring additional size and experience to our group - two things we have been looking for," said Jam Head Coach Will Voigt. "As the biggest guy on the roster, we expect him to fortify the front court immediately."

Though not drafted by an NBA team, John spent significant time with the Indiana Pacers in 2004-05 and the Atlanta Hawks during the 2005-06 season. He also has considerable experience in the NBA D-League, including a 16-game stint with the Sioux Falls Skyforce last season, where he averaged 9.0 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.1 blocks in 20.6 minutes per game.

Hawkins, a New Mexico State product, was one of Bakersfield's allocation players. He scored 10.9 points and grabbed 3.9 rebounds per game for the Jam in 15 games (seven starts) this season, including a season-high 22-point performance at Los Angeles on November 29.

"We really appreciate Justin's performance for the Jam this season," Voigt said. "He was a key player for us, and we wish him all the best in Iowa."

Hawkins, who had been released after an earlier injury, was re-acquired immediately prior to the trade as guard Lance Hurdle was released due to injury.
