Toronto Marlies Host Annual Canadian Armed Forces Appreciation Day

March 6, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Toronto Marlies News Release

The Toronto Marlies and their fans will honour the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) during their game against the Adirondack Flames on Saturday, March 7 at 3 p.m. at Ricoh Coliseum. For the sixth consecutive year, the Marlies will dedicate this game to show their appreciation for the CAF.

Over 300 members of the Canadian Armed Forces will be in attendance on Saturday afternoon through ticket donations from MLSE. The CAF will be represented by personnel from the Army's 4th Canadian Division, Canadian Forces College (CFC), Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Borden, Her Majesty's Canadian Ship (HMCS) York, the Royal Canadian Air Force's (RCAF) 8 Wing Trenton and 16 Wing Borden.

Throughout the game, members of the Canadian Armed Forces will be honoured and recognized in a variety of ways. As part of the pregame ceremonies, Colonel Dwayne Hobbs and Chief Warrant Officer Grant Lawson will participate in the ceremonial puck drop and the American and Canadian National Anthems will be performed alongside the flag party from Her Majesty's Canadian Ship (HMCS) York. Members of the Canadian Armed Forces will also take part in all in-game activations, including a G Wagon t-shirt toss, push-up competition and goal shootout. Following the game, all uniformed members of the CAF in attendance will be invited down to centre-ice for a photo opportunity with members of the Toronto Marlies organization.

MLSE's history with the Canadian military can be traced back to as early as 1927 starting with Maple Leafs owner Conn Smythe, who was a Major with the Canadian Armed Forces and represented Canada in World War I and II. Many members of the Arenas, St. Pats and Maple Leafs served in WWI and II, including Hall of Famers Red Kelly, Turk Broda and Syl Apps. Several MLSE executives have also visited Afghanistan on goodwill missions.
