Syracuse, NY - After giving up the first goal of the game in the opening period, the Portland Pirates (31-22-3-1) scored three straight goals before the first intermission and never trailed again as the Pirates notched a 5-2 win over the Syracuse Crunch (33-16-8-0) at the Onondaga County War Memorial on Friday night.
The Crunch drew first blood as captain Mike Angelidis found the back of the net on a rebound goal at 9:45 in the first period. It was his 17th goal of the season as Charlie Dodero and Dylan Blujus picked up the assists.
Portland answered back quickly when Darian Dziurzynski netted one 32 seconds later, his 14th of the season. Joel Hanley and Francis Wathier picked up the assists.
Dylan Reese gave Portland the lead at 16:19 with a goal from the top of the left circle assisted by Jordan Martinook and Henrik Samuelsson.
The Pirates stayed red hot as Brendan Shinnimin scored his 13th goal of the season at 17:55. Jordan Szwarz and Justin Hodgman on the assists.
The action seemed to be settling down in the second frame until the 15:53 mark, when Cody Kunyk scored for Syracuse, pulling the team within one goal. It was Slater Koekkoek with the lone assist.
But, the Pirates once again answered back quickly when Phillip Samuelsson found his brother Henrik at the net 57 seconds later for Henrik's 11th marker of the season. Alex Bolduc also picked up an assist.
Martinook finished Syracuse off with an empty net goal at 19:09 in the third period, his 13th goal of the season.
Mike McKenna (21-14-2) came up with some great saves in net and stopped 22 out of 24 shots. Syracuse's Kristers Gudlevskis (18-10-2) made 20 saves on 24 shots. Pirates are now 25-0-0-0 when they score three or more goals in a game this season.
The Pirates continue their three-game road trip tomorrow when they stop at the PPL Center in Allentown, Pennsylvania to play the Lehigh Valley Phantoms at 7:05 p.m. "Voice of the Pirates" Jeff Mannix has the call starting with the Pirates Pregame Show at 6:45 on the WPEI Portland Pirates Radio Network. Portland concludes the trip against the Hershey Bears at the Giant Center on Sunday at 5:00 p.m.
