Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
The Albuquerque Isotopes (43-33) surrendered five home runs, the most the team has allowed all season, in an 8-4 loss to the Nashville Sounds (31-45) on Saturday night at Isotopes Park. The loss snaps the 'Topes' three-game winning streak, and coupled with an Oklahoma City win, drops the Isotopes to a game and a half in back of the Redhawks in the PCL American Southern Division.
The 'Topes initially jumped out to an early lead in the second inning when Scott Van Slyke slapped a single to left-center, advanced to second when Jerry Sands was hit by a pitch from Sounds starter Mark Rogers, and took third on a walk to Tim Federowicz that loaded the bases. Matt Angle then slapped a two-run single to left to put Albuquerque up 2-0.
The small advantage proved to be the home team's only lead of the game, as the Sounds responded in the third when Rogers proved as a capable at the plate as he was on the mound, blasting his first home run of the season, a two-run shot that knotted the score 2-2.
Nashville would add another run in the fourth with an RBI single from Eric Farris, before stringing together a four-run sixth that put the game out of reach. Andy Gonzalez and Sean Halton led off the home run derby with back-to-back solo dingers that made the score 5-2. Two batters later, after a 'Topes pitching change, Farris poked a single to right that set the stage for Corey Patterson, who smashed a two-run shot to extend the lead 7-2. The trio of homers in the sixth was the most allowed in a single inning by the Isotopes all year, and the three given up by starter Michael Antonini (1-6) ties his season-high for most in a single appearance.
The Sounds padded their lead in the seventh with a final solo home run by Halton, his second of the game, that widened the gap 8-2.
Albuquerque attempted a comeback in the bottom half of the frame when Angle and pinch-hitter Brian Cavazos-Galvez knocked consecutive singles with one out. Trent Oeltjen then continued his hot streak by roping a two-run triple to left, bringing the 'Topes within 8-4.
From there Nashville reliever Donovan Hand authored a scoreless eighth and ninth, retiring the side in both frames for six straight outs and an 8-4 Sounds victory.
Albuquerque and Nashville continue their series tomorrow as 'Topes righty Fernando Nieve (3-5, 7.05) gets the ball against Sounds right-hander Brian Baker (1-3, 6.39). First pitch is set for 6:05 PM from Isotopes Park.
The Isotopes action-packed homestand rolls on with an appearance by Rally tomorrow followed by an adult fun run on Monday. Tickets for any Isotopes game may be purchased at the Isotopes Park Box Office, at Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 1-800-745-3000, or on-line at www.abqisotopes.com or www.ticketmaster.com.
