Sacramento River Cats News Release
LAS VEGAS - Travis Banwart tossed six innings of one-run ball after earning a spot start Sunday afternoon, lifting Sacramento to a 6-1 victory over the Las Vegas 51s at Cashman Field.
Banwart-who had been pitching out of the bullpen for Sacramento-was named Sunday's starter after scheduled starter A.J. Griffin was promoted to the A's prior to the game. Banwart (5-2) struck out four and did not walk a batter, scattering six hits and improving to 2-0 in eight appearances since May 14.
The Cats picked up a pair of runs in the first inning on a Daric Barton sacrifice fly and a Chris Carter solo home run. After adding a single run in the eighth on a bases-loaded walk, Daric Barton and Stephen Parker hit ninth-inning home runs to give the Cats some additional insurance.
The loss fell to 51s starter Andrew Carpenter (5-3), who allowed two runs and walked five batters in six innings.
Carter ended the day with two hits, including his team-leading 52nd RBI of the season. Parker's blast-a two-run shot-was his sixth of the year, while Barton's solo homer was his fourth long ball of the season.
The series continues Monday, when RHP Graham Godfrey (7-0, 1.93 ERA) takes the ball for Sacramento. Las Vegas will counter with RHP Joel Carreno (2-2, 6.20 ERA), with first pitch from Cashman Field set for 7:05 p.m. PT.
Sacramento returns home Tuesday for a seven-game homestand against Salt Lake and Colorado Springs. The homestand opener is set for 7:05 p.m. at Raley Field, and is Bark in the Ballpark Night, where fans can bring their furry friends inside Raley Field. Fans are encouraged to call (916) 371-HITS for details.
