Tucson Padres News Release
The Fresno Grizzlies scored three times in the first inning against Bear Bay Saturday and held on to beat the Tucson Padres, 4-3. The Padres scored two unearned runs in the top of the sixth inning to get within one, but could not score after the sixth despite putting runners on in the seventh and ninth innings. Fresno starter Jason Stevenson allowed only one earned run in 5.2 innings of work and picked up his second win of the year. Bay threw a season-high seven innings but suffered the loss, his fourth since joining Tucson.
Trailing 4-1 in the sixth, with Jedd Gyorko at second base, Cody Decker hit a towering pop up to shortstop Syler Stromsmoe. When Stromsmoe dropped the ball, Gyorko scored and Decker ended up at second. One batter later, Amadeo Zazueta's single scored Decker and put the Padres within one. In the top of the ninth inning, Blake Tekotte hit a one-out, pinch hit single to right field but was caught trying to steal second base two pitches later. Sawyer Carroll then flied to left, ending the game.
Fresno left fielder Brett Pill went 2-for-3 with two home runs and three RBIs. Mitch Lively, Jean Machi and Heath Hembree pitched scoreless outings out of the bullpen for Fresno. The Padres dropped to 1-4 against Fresno this season and have now lost nine of their last 10 games.
