Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
The Albuquerque Isotopes (58-54) got a three-run homer from Jerry Sands as part of a four-run fifth that propelled the âTopes to a 6-3 series-opening win over the Tacoma Rainiers (55-57) on a soggy Wednesday night at Isotopes Park.
Tacoma held a slim 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth when Jay Gibbons started the rally with a two-out single. Russ Mitchell then added another single in front of Sands, who blasted a monstrous three-run shot to center that instantly put the âTopes on top 5-3. Albuquerque wasn't finished, as Jamie Hoffmann followed with a single, stole second, and scored on an RBI double by John Lindsey that increased the lead to 6-3 Isotopes.
From there, Albuquerque pitching took over as starter Mike Parisi, after a slow start, settled in to post three straight scoreless frames before turning the ball over to Ramon Troncoso in the seventh, who delivered another zero. Roman Colon chipped in a scoreless eighth, before Travis Schlichting (2) earned his second save of the season with a one-two-three ninth that delivered the Isotopes a 6-3 triumph.
While the ending was excellent, the beginning was a little rough for the Isotopes as Alex Liddi put Tacoma on the board with a two-run blast in the first that put the visitors on top 2-0 after just a half a frame.
The Rainiers added another tally in the third on an RBI single by Carlos Peguero to grab a 3-0 lead before the âTopes finally awoke in the bottom of the third. Joe Becker led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice by Brad Coon. After Ivan De Jesus Jr. drew a walk, Mitchell hammered a two-out double that scored both runners and drew the Isotopes to within 3-2.
The three Tacoma runs was all that starter Parisi (2-1) would yield in a solid outing that saw him pitch six solid innings in which he allowed three runs on six hits while walking five and striking out four to earn his second win in as many home starts. Rainiers righty Forrest Snow (0-1) suffered the loss.
The Isotopes will entertain the Rainiers again Thursday with right-hander Tim Sexton (3-5, 6.42) making the start for the âTopes against Tacoma southpaw Anthony Vasquez (3-2, 3.24) in a 7:05 PM start from Isotopes Park.
Albuquerque's big homestand continues on Thursday with a lunch bag giveaway to the first 1,500 fans courtesy of Webster University. On Friday, the âTopes kick-off the weekend in style with an Orbit Bank giveaway before hosting another spectacular fireworks show on Saturday. Tickets for any Isotopes game may be purchased at the Isotopes Park Box Office, at Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 1-800-745-3000, or on-line at www.albuquerquebaseball.com or www.ticketmaster.com.
