Iowa Cubs News Release

Behind a quality start by Nick Struck, the Iowa Cubs (49-64) made it back-to-back wins over the Fresno Grizzlies (50-63) with a 5-2 victory on Thursday night at Principal Park. The start of the game was delayed 27 minutes due to rain.

The Cubs and Grizzlies traded runs in the third inning. Fresno put runners on the corners with one out after singles by Edgar Gonzalez and Brett Pill. Conor Gillaspie broke the scoring seal on the game with a sac fly to score Gonzalez. Brett Jackson tied the game in the home half of the frame with a two-out solo home run.

In the fourth, Brad Snyder put the Cubs up 2-1 with a solo home run of his own to lead off the inning. In the sixth, Snyder singled and moved to third after a Bryan LaHair double. Steve Clevenger knocked in Snyder with an RBI sac fly to put the Cubs ahead 3-1.

Struck (2-3) cruised through six innings to give the Cubs his third quality start of the season. He allowed one run on five hits and struck out a season-high seven batters in the winning effort.

With Struck out of the game in the top of the seventh inning, the Grizzlies pulled the game to within one run off reliever Carlton Smith. Fresno got three straight base hits by Tyler Graham, pinch-hitter Brad Eldred, and an RBI-single by Emmanuel Burriss. After a fielder's choice and a wild pitch, Smith was able to get out of the inning with runners stranded on second and third.

Lou Montanez tacked on two more runs for Iowa in the bottom of the seventh with a perfectly placed bloop double down the right field line.

John Gaub pitched the final two innings for the Cubs out of the bullpen. He allowed two hits and struck out two en route to his sixth save of the year.

Matt Yourkin (8-6) took the loss for the Grizzlies. He pitched six innings, allowed three runs on six hits and struck out three.

Jackson finished the game 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run, and Snyder went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

The Cubs and Grizzlies play game three of this four-game set tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. Jay Jackson (5-11, 6.32) is scheduled to take the mound for Iowa opposite Andrew Kown (9-7, 4.45) for Fresno.
