
Topes Stop Skid at Four with Fifth Inning Outburst

The Isotopes (9-9) ended a four-game losing streak defeating the division-rival Oklahoma City (10-8) for the first time this season with a final score of 8-1.
Isotopes starter Matt Magill (2.84) matched his season high in strikeouts. The righty punched out seven batters for the third consecutive game, but allowed four walks in his outing. The first four outs he recorded came via the punch out and he fanned seven of the first 10 hitters. Magill went four innings allowing one run on a homer which was also the only hit against him. He did not factor into the decision.
RHP Anthony Ortega (1-0, 0.00) earned the win for Albuquerque tossing two scoreless innings of relief in his first appearance since 2011. Ortega was shelved in 2012 after Tommy John surgery. RHP Steve Ames pitched added two scoreless innings of relief to the bullpen line. He struck out one and allowed a hit. RHP Chris Withrow finished the game for Albuquerque firing a scoreless ninth. He allowed one hit and struck out two. Oklahoma City catcher Cody Clark (1-for-4) left no doubt on a solo home run to left field in the top of the third inning putting the first run of the game on the scoreboard.
Albuquerque jumped all over RedHawk starting pitcher Rudy Owens plating five runs and batting around in the fourth inning. 1B Scott Van Slyk (3-for-5) followed an Alex Castellanos walk with his second double of the night sending Castelllanos home tying the game at one. LF Nick Buss (1-for-3) followed a single by Rusty Ryal (1-for-4) with a bunt base hit scoring Van Slyke giving the Isotopes a 2-1 advatage. Albuquerque tacked on three more runs before the inning ended. Ryal came home on the second wild pitch of the frame and SS Dee Gordon (2-for-4) and 2B Elian Herrera (2-for-5) added RBI singles.
Van Slyke blasted his seventh home run on the season in the seventh frame scoring Castellanos on the play extending the Topes lead to 7-1. Van Slyke's seven long balls lead the Pacific Coast League. His 23 RBI rank second in the league. Herrera drove in catcher Jesus Flores to add an insurance run to the Topes tally making the score 8-1 in the eighth. Southpaw Owens (0-3, 3.71) suffered the loss allowing five runs on seven hits. He also walked four and struck out seven.
The Isotopes and RedHawks will take the field one more time in their first series of the 2013 season tomorrow Tuesday, April 23 at 12:05 PM. RHP Angel Castro takes the ball for Albuquerque (1-1, 4.50) against Oklahoma City's righty Jordan Lyles (1-1, 4.08). Catch all of the game action on 1050 AM with Josh Suchon on the call.
