Iowa Cubs News Release
Memphis, TN - Ian Stewart, Brad Nelson, and Brian Bogusevic paced the offense, Brooks Raley dealt on the mound, and the lefties led the Iowa Cubs (6-11) to a 5-2 win over the Memphis Redbirds (10-7) at Auto Zone Park tonight. This was the Cubs' first win in this series after the Redbirds won the first two contests.
The Cubs jumped out to the early lead with two runs in the top of the first off Redbirds' starter Seth Maness. Logan Watkins hit the first pitch of the game to the wall in left-center field for a double. After a groundout, Stewart launched another double over the head of Justin Christian in center for an RBI and the Cubs were on the board. Stewart moved to third on a groundout and scored when Bogusevic beat out a chopper to shortstop for an infield hit. The knock also extended Bogusevic's hitting streak to eight games.
The Cubs added another run in the top of the fifth. Raley led off with a single, moved up to second on a walk to Watkins, advanced to third on a deep flyout by Ty Wright, and scored as Stewart delivered a sacrifice fly to deep left.
The Cubs capped their scoring in the sixth when Bogusevic laced a leadoff double to the opposite field and Nelson followed with a home run into the Redbirds' bullpen in deep left-center. It was Nelson's third home run of the season.
Raley held the Redbirds scoreless through the first five innings before the Redbirds broke through in the sixth. Christian and Kolten Wong had consecutive singles to open the inning and both advanced on a groundout to shortstop. After a walk to Brock Peterson loaded the bases, the Cubs turned to Zach Putnam out of the bullpen. Putnam walked Ryan Jackson on four pitches to force in one run. After a strikeout, Chad Huffman had his bat explode in four pieces as he made contact on a dribbler towards third base that went for an infield hit and an RBI. Putnam struck out Rob Johnson to end the inning.
Both runs were charged to Raley (2-2) to end a streak of 15.1 consecutive scoreless innings over his last three starts, but the southpaw earned the win. Putnam stayed in and pitched a scoreless seventh inning. Rafael Dolis allowed one hit in a scoreless eighth and Blake Parker finished the ninth for his second save. Maness (2-2) was charged with the loss. Another lefty, Ryan Sweeney, singled in the third inning and extended his team-high hitting streak to nine games.
The Cubs and Redbirds wrap up this series tomorrow afternoon at 2:00. RH Nick Struck (0-1, 6.00) will start for the Cubs against RH Michael Wacha (2-0, 2.25) for the Redbirds. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 and streamed at iowacubs.com with the pre-game show starting at 1:40.
