The Topes (10-9) knocked around a season-high 21 hits in route to their 12-2 win over Oklahoma City (10-9) evening the series at two in the finale. Eight of nine Isotopes batters had a multiple-hit game.
Albuquerque starter Angel Castro (2-1, 3.50) gave the Topes six solid innings of work earning the win. The righty allowed just one run on a solo homer and surrendered five hits. He also struck out two batters. RHP Peter Moylan finished the game for Albuquerque firing a scoreless ninth inning. Moylan punched out one hitter.
The Topes put pressure on the RedHawks from the start plating six runs in the top of the first inning. SS Dee Gordon (2-for-5) led off the game with his sixth double of the season. Two batters later RF Alex Castellanos (3-for-5) singled scoring Gordon on the play. Six consecutive singles following Castellanos' RBI hit resulted in three addition runs with LF Matt Angle (3-for-5), 2B Alfredo Amezaga (3-for-3) and designated hitter Tony Gwynn Jr. (3-for-5) picking up an RBI each. RedHawk starter Jordan Lyles waked in a run to cap the scoring in the first. Albuquerque tallied eight hits in the opening frame.
Albuquerque tacked on three additional runs in the second expanding its lead to 8-0. Amezaga collected his second RBI of the day driving in RF Scott Van Slyke (3-for-4) on a sacrifice fly. Catcher Matt Wallach (2-for-3) singled later in the inning scoring CF Chili Buss and Angle.
RedHawk third baseman Jimmy Paredes (2-for-4) cut into the Albuquerque lead in the top of the fifth. Paredes blasted a solo shot over the left field fence reducing the Isotope advantage to 8-1.
Albuquerque picked up two runs in its half of the sixth. Buss singled and advanced on a throwing error by first baseman Brett Wallace. Angle picked up his second RBI of the game on his third hit. Angle ultimately scored on a wild pitch by Eric Berger putting Albuquerque in front 10-1.
Oklahoma City inched a run closer in the seventh with the help of an error. Paredes scampered home on a Gordon error at shortstop off the bat of catcher Jason Jaramillo (0-for-3). Wallach, sacrifice fly, and Gordon, single, each picked up an RBI in the ninth pulling the game further out of the reach of Oklahoma City 12-2.
LHP Kelvin De La Cruz tossed two innings of relief for the Topes. He allowed one unearned run on three hits and fanned one. RHP Lyles finished the first inning but did not continue. He suffered the loss falling to 1-2 with a 6.27 ERA on the season. Lyles allowed five runs on eight hits and walked a batter.
The Isotopes head to Round Rock to match up with the Express for the first time in 2013. The series begins Thursday, April 25 at 6:05 PM from Dell Diamond following an off day for the Topes tomorrow. Albuquerque RHP Blake Johnson (1-0, 6.75) is slated to open the series against Round Rock righty Collin Balester (1-2, 5.40). The Topes return home Monday, April 29 for an eight-game homestand against the Memphis Redbirds and New Orleans Zephyrs.
