April 23, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Tacoma Rainiers News Release
SALT LAKE CITY - Nick Franklin recorded his eighth RBI of the season and Eric Thames stretched his current hitting streak to eight games as the Tacoma Rainiers edged the Salt Lake Bees 2-1 at Spring Mobile Ballpark on Tuesday.
With Tacoma trailing 1-0, the second baseman Franklin drove in outfielder Denny Almonte for the game-tying run with a two-out single to center field. Outfielder Eric Thames was responsible for plating the go-ahead run, scoring Leury Bonilla with a one-out single in the fourth.
Thames has now hit safely in 18 of his first 20 games with the Rainiers this season, and is currently riding his second hit streak of at least eight games. He is the only player in the Pacific Coast League to reach safely in each of his team first 20 games to start the year.
The Rainiers combined to collect 11 hits on Tuesday, with Stefen Romero, Scott Savastano and Leury Bonilla each turning in team-high two-hit efforts.
Starter Brian Sweeney (2-0) picked up his second win in his third start and fifth appearance this season. The right-hander limited the Bees to one run on five hits over 5.0 innings, and struck out a season-high six batters without issuing a walk.
Relievers Lucas Luetge (2.0 IP) and Logan Bawcom (2.0 IP) combined to fan five batters over 4.0 scoreless innings. Bawcom picked up his second save this season following two frames of work over the eighth and ninth.
The Rainiers (10-10) enjoy a scheduled league off day tomorrow before opening the second leg of the club's eight-game road trip on Thursday, April 25 at Las Vegas. Left-hander Danny Hultzen (3-1, 2.78) is scheduled to start for the Rainiers in the first game of the four-game series with the 51s against right-hander Zack Wheeler (0-1, 4.91) for Las Vegas.
