Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Dean Anna's two-run double in the sixth inning gave the Tucson Padres the lead, and they tacked on three runs in the eighth inning Tuesday night en route to a 6-2 victory over the Albuquerque Isotopes at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Sean O'Sullivan (2-2) gave up a two-run double to Topes catcher Jesus Flores in the second inning. After that, he didn't allow any additional runs. O'Sullivan struck out five and walked three in six innings.
Relievers Colt Hynes, Nick Vincent and Mikes Mikolas each pitched a scoreless inning to close out the Padres victory.
Topes starter Sean White (1-4) had faced one batter over the minimum after three scoreless innings and retired the first two batters in the fourth. Then he walked Brandon Allen, and Jonathan Galvez hit a comebacker that went off the leg of White and bounced back toward home. White recovered, but his throw to first base was errant, resulting in a two-base error and a run scoring.
With the Topes still leading 2-1 in the fifth, Rene Rivera singled to center and Jeff Decker singled to right. After a sacrifice bunt by O'Sullivan, Anna hit a 2-0 pitch just inside the bag at first base to score two runs on a ground-rule double.
In the eighth, the Padres scored three insurance runs off Josh Wall. Daniel Robertson tripled to start the inning. James Darnell grounded out, and with the infield pulled in, Robertson remained at third. Allen was intentional walked to put runners at the corners.
Galvez hit a checked swing bouncer over the head off Wall and shortstop Alfredo Amezaga's only play was at first base, scoring Robertson on the groundout. Wall walked Gregorio Petit. Then Rivera hit a single to right field that scored Allen. Right fielder Matt Angle's throw to third base got past third baseman Rusty Ryal and the error allowed Petit to score the final run.
Leo Rodriguez made his Triple-A debut on a double switch in the eighth inning. Called up from extended spring training earlier in the day, Rodriguez singled in his first at-bat in the ninth inning.
The four-game series with Tucson continues on Wednesday. Matt Palmer will start for the Topes. Thad Weber is on the hill for Tucson. The game begins at 8:05 pm MDT.
