Sky Sox Fall to I-Cubs, 8-6

After a four hour and eight minute rain delay, the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (18-13) dropped the second game of their series against the Iowa Cubs (12-18), 8-6, at Security Service Field on Math Day in front of 5,847 fans.

The game was originally scheduled to begin at 11:05 a.m., but steady rain delayed the first pitch until 3:13 p.m. Pitcher Aaron Cook was scheduled to pitch for the Sky Sox, but was scratched from his start and replaced by Cory Riordan.

Riordan started off strong in his first start of the season, forcing three groundball outs in a scoreless first inning. In the top of the second the righty gave up two straight hits to begin the inning and a fielding error by Tommy Manzella brought home the first two runs of the day. The Cubs added two more runs on a sacrifice fly by Dave Sappelt and a single by Alberto Gonzalez to take a four run lead at the end of the second inning.

Colorado Springs began to mount a comeback in the bottom of the third when pitcher Brett Jacobson, who relieved Riordan in the top of the inning, drew a leadoff walk. After Corey Dickerson hit a single, DJ LeMahieu grounded into a force out to put runners on the corners with one out. Cubs' starting pitcher Brad Loux then walked Charlie Blackmon to load the bases and proceeded to give up a RBI single to Ryan Wheeler for the Sky Sox' first run of the game. An at-bat later, Ben Paulsen laced a single into left field to plate LeMahieu and Blackmon. With the score 4-3, catcher Lars Davis tied the ballgame up with a single up the middle.

The game remained tied at four until the top of the sixth inning. Reliever Mike McClendon came on for the Sky Sox and allowed a single and a double to the first two batters he faced. The runners then scored on a ground out by third baseman Josh Vitters and a double by Brad Nelson to give Iowa the 6-4 lead.

The I-Cubs tacked on two more runs in the top of the eighth inning off of reliever Manny Corpas, who gave up a leadoff home run to Brian Bogusevic and a RBI single to Darnell McDonald. In the bottom of the inning the Sky Sox cut the deficit down to two, on doubles by Davis, Iribarren and Dickerson, but could not retake the lead.

Cubs' reliever Blake Parker took the mound in the ninth and got a 1-2-3 inning to earn his fourth save of the year and hand the Sky Sox their 13th loss of the season. Both teams will take the field tomorrow at 11:05 a.m. for the third game of the series. Right-hander Chris Volstad (0-0, 4.22) is scheduled to face off against right-hander Drew Carpenter (1-3, 7.77).

Sky Sox Notes: DJ LeMahieu extended his hit streak to 17 games in the fourth inning when he hit a single to right field. The 17-game hit streak surpasses Corey Dickerson's 16-game hit streak for the longest by a Sky Sox player this season...
