Toledo's Bats Overpower Louisville Again

June 1, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release

The Hens struck early once again on Wednesday, en route to an 8-3 victory over the Bats. Toledo has taken two of three in their four game stint at Louisville and nine of the first thirteen meetings with their IL West rivals.

As they have been in eight of their last ten games, the Hens were the ones to open the scoring. Anthony Gose walked to lead off the game with Dixon Machado coming up to bat. Machado grounded to third, but a throwing error at first as well as one at home plate allowed Gose to score. Machado reached third on what was ruled an infield single with two throwing errors and Toledo was to play from in front yet again. Tyler Collins later singled through the right side to make for an early 2-0 lead.

The Bats answered back in their half of the first on a Jesse Winker double that scored Carlos Triunfel, who reached by way of a single.

Toledo would produce a run in each of the next three innings. In the second, a leadoff walk by Jason Krizan set up a John Hicks double to make it 3-1. The away half of the third featured Steven Moya's third home run in four games - a solo blast that made it 4-1. The left fielder gathered three hits on the night. Since rejoining the Hens, Moya has gone 5-for-17 with 3 homers and 5 RBIs.

The fourth saw two more runs for the Hens, with an RBI single by Dixon Machado and sacrifice fly by Moya.

After that hiccup in the first, Mud Hens starter Daniel Norris began to settle in. The lefty cruised until the seventh, where he was able to record one out before back-to-back doubles would end his night. Angel Nesbitt entered and gave up a hit that scored the inherited runner, thus adding on a third earned run to Norris' line. The southpaw allowed 10 hits and one walk with three earned runs while tallying a season-high nine strikeouts over 6.1 innings of work to pick up his third straight win on the mound.

The two runs in the seventh allowed Louisville to cut the lead to 6-3.

The Hens would answer back in the eighth, the rally beginning with another double by Hicks. The catcher finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Gose singled in Hicks but was caught stealing befoe Machado blasted a solo shot to left-center, making it 8-3. The homer was Machado's first of the season.

Logan Kensing was called upon to finish the game in a non-save situation. Kensing gave up a single and a walk, but was able to slam the door without allowing any runs to cross and preserve an 8-3 victory for the Hens.

The Mud Hens finish their road series at Louisville on Thursday and return home for a weekend series with Indianapolis that begins Friday at 7:05 p.m. at Fifth Third Field.
