Wings Drop Back-To-Back Games in Indy

June 1, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Rochester Red Wings News Release

Indianapolis, IN - Fans in Indianapolis almost witnessed a no-hitter but that thought was spoiled thanks to James Beresford.

The Indianapolis Indians had a combined no-hitter going against the Rochester Red Wings through 8.1 innings but Beresford ended the bid with a single up the middle against Jorge Rondon. The Indians narrowly escaped with a 2-0 win.

Jorge Polanco followed Beresford with a single of his own to left to bring the winning run to the plate

Eddie Rosario lined out to right and the Indians' (27-24) Willy Garcia gunned Beresford out at third for the game ending double play.

If not for the pair of single in the ninth it would have been the first combined no-hitter thrown against Red Wings (29-24) in franchise history and the first no-hitter tossed against the Wings since Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's Jeremy Cummings did so against Rochester on September 3, 2006.

Wings' starter Logan Darnell (5-5) picked up where he left off from his last start. He spun a complete game shutout against Charlotte just five days prior and started off Wednesday's game by retiring 12 of the first 13 batters he faced

Darnell's surrendered his first hit in the bottom of the second to former Red Wing Danny Ortiz who lifted a bloop into shallow left field and he legged it into a standup double.

Darnell retired the side in the first, third and fourth innings and needed just 42 pitches to get through the first four innings.

Indianapolis starter Tyler Glasnow (5-2) was equally impressive in the early going. Glasnow held the Wings hitless through the first four innings but did yield four walks to Rochester hitters.

In the third, Carlos Paulino walked and advanced to second on a groundout but he was the lone Wing to reach scoring position through the first five innings against Glasnow.

The Indians broke the tie in the home half of the fifth. Jason Rogers led off the frame by knocking a triple to warning track in left center and would score one batter later off an Ortiz sac fly to deep right to make it 1-0.

Rain began falling in Indianapolis around 2:50 p.m. and after a delay of two hours and fifteen minutes play resumed at 5:05 p.m.

Glasnow tossed five innings of no-hit baseball with four walks and three strikeouts before and left in line for the win as he gave way to lefty Cory Luebke following the rain delay.

Rochester gave Marcus Walden the nod after the rain passed as Darnell exited after giving up one run on two hits with three strikeouts in five innings of work. He only threw 62 pitches and faced just two batters over the minimum through five innings but suffered the loss.

A walk turned into a run for the Indians in the sixth. Alen Hanson worked a one-out walk and was doubled home two batters later by Adam Frazier to make it 2-0. Walden came back for the bottom of the seventh to retire the side in order.

Meanwhile, the Wings could not seem to figure out the Indians pitching. Jorge Polanco drew a free pass leading off the fourth but the combo of Glasnow, Luebke and Trey Haley combined to retire 15 straight batters from the second batter of the fourth through the last batter in the eighth inning.

Luebke and Haley faced nine total batters and struck out eight of them. Luebke sat down five via the strikeout and Haley struck out the side in the eighth.

Indians' pitching finished with 11 strikeouts and four walks while just allowing the two hits

It is the first time the Wings have lost back-to-back games since they did so against Syracuse on May 2-3. Rochester would have moved into a tie for first place with Scranton with a win but remains in second place in the division.
