Syracuse Mets News Release
Charlotte, NC - The Syracuse Chiefs fell to the Charlotte Knights, 5-3, Wednesday night at BB&T Ballpark. Brian Goodwin homered for the second night in a row, and drove in two runs in the loss. The Knights, however, homered twice in the bottom of the eighth to help complete the sweep.
Charlotte (28-26) got on the board in the first inning for the second straight night. Jason Coats walked with two outs against Chiefs starter Austin Voth. Matt Davidson then doubled home Coats for a 1-0 lead.
The Knights added another tally in the second. Vinny Rottino hit his second home run of the year to extend the lead to 2-0.
Syracuse (27-24) finally broke through against Knights starter Scott Carroll in the seventh. The Chiefs did not have a hit through five and just one hit through six. That all changed when Goodwin led off the seventh with his sixth home run of the year to cut the lead in half. After Carroll walked den Dekker and Skole back-to-back, the Knights turned to Chris Beck. Beck induced a double-play groundout by Jason Martinson, but Caleb Ramsey singled in Skole a batter later to square the game at two.
Goodwin was not done, and pushed the Chiefs into the lead in the eighth. Tony Campana doubled to start the inning. Then, after Trea Turner walked, Goodwin singled home Campana to lift Syracuse to a 3-2 lead.
But the Knights came back in a powerful bottom of the eighth. After Trevor Gott retired the first two batters of the frame, the Chiefs turned to Rafael Martin. Charlotte followed by hitting two home runs in three batters, with Coats going deep to tie the game on a fly ball barely over the short fence in right-center field. Davidson followed with a single to bring up Danny Hayes. The Charlotte designated hitter followed with a long fly down the right-field line that was ruled fair, giving Charlotte a 5-3 lead on the two-run home run. Chiefs manager Billy Gardner, Jr. and Campana were ejected arguing the play.
Syracuse heads to Buffalo Thursday to open a four-game, home-and-home series with the Bisons. Aaron Laffey is scheduled to start for the Chiefs opposite I.L. Player of the Month Wade LeBlanc for the Bisons. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
