SWB Game Notes

June 1, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Phil Coke, Conor Mullee, James Pazos and Anthony Swarzak combined on a three-hitter as the RailRiders shut out the Durham Bulls on Tuesday night, 2-0. The RailRiders' league-best ninth shutout win made for the Bulls' league-worst-tying 10th shutout loss.

MAY FLOWERS: SWB finished the month of May at 18-11, the most May wins for the franchise since the 2008 Governors' Cup title team also won 18 games. However, Al Pedrique's club posted a better winning percentage than Dave Miley's unit that lost a dozen May games in 2008.

THE COKE SIDE OF LIFE: Coke allowed three hits over the first 5.2 innings, all singles including one on the infield. The team improved to 4-0 when he pitches and his Triple-A ERA plunged to 0.51. Over 17.2 innings, he has struck out 17, walked three and has allowed just 10 hits for a .164 batting average against and 0.74 WHIP. He has given up just two runs (one earned) as a RailRider.

WHAT A RELIEF: Mullee, Pazos and Swarzak then saw just one man reach base, Luke Maile on a two-out error in the eighth, to cement the shutout. Mullee (4-0) got the win while Swarzak recorded his team-best sixth save in as many tries. Mullee tied Opening Day starter Chad Green for the team lead in victories and lowered his Triple-A ERA to 0.77. In 23.1 innings, Mullee has whiffed 28 (10.8K/9IP), walked six (4.7:1 K:BB) and allowed a dozen hits for a .150 BAA and 0.77 WHIP. Mullee leads all IL relievers for fewest baserunners/9IP (6.94). Over his last seven relief appearances, Swarzak has gone 6-for-6 in save attempts. In that time, he has thrown 9.2 innings, giving up one run (0.93 ERA) on five hits (.152 BAA) and one walk (0.62 WHIP) against 14 strikeouts (13.03 K/9IP). Despite not moving to the bullpen until May 10, he is tied with Buffalo's David Aardsma for the third-most saves in the IL.

BELIEVE: Nick Swisher's eighth-inning single knocked in the game's only two runs. He also robbed Daniel Robertson with a diving grab of a first-inning liner near the first-base line.

LOOK OUT BELOW: In the nine-hole, Jonathan Diaz went 1-for-2 with two walks and a pair of stolen bases, his first two swipes of the season. Diaz played his college baseball at N.C. State. His college stadium, Doak Field, is just a 30-minute drive away from Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

@THE_HIGSTER: Kyle Higashioka made his third start as the RailRiders' catcher. The team has gone 3-0 with him behind the plate, all shutout triumphs. He finished Tuesday 1-for-4 with a pair of deep fly-outs to center field. He entered 2016 as a .233 career hitter before slashing .286/.338/.437/.775 in 34 games as the primary catcher for Double-A Trenton to start this season.

OFF THE RAILS: After going 0-for-2 with the bases loaded on Tuesday, the RailRiders have hit .220 with the bases loaded this season going 11-for-50 with 10 strikeouts and just three extra-base hits...The four SWB pitchers used on Tuesday combined to strike out 12 Bulls while walking one...The RailRiders lowered their team ERA to a Triple-A-best 2.79...SWB is on pace to post 25 shutouts, which would shatter the franchise record of 15 set by the 2003 Red Barons...Over his last 14 games, Aaron Judge has gone 7-for-52 (.135) with no extra-base hits, four walks and 18 strikeouts...He is hitless over his last 15 at-bats with six strikeouts, a funk that has dropped his batting average to a season-low .230...At .292, his OBP is the lowest it has been since it was at .250 after the season's first two games...At .387, his slugging percentage is lowest it has been since it stood at .333 after game three of the campaign.

RUNNING WITH THE BULLS: At 25.8, Durham stands tied with Rochester for the second-youngest group of position players in the IL, trailing only Indianapolis (25.3)...The Bulls' offense ranks worst in the IL in runs (3.00/game), batting average (.226), on-base percentage (.299), slugging percentage (.334) and strikeouts (486)...Durham pitchers have allowed an IL-high 46 homers, but lead the loop in K/9IP (9.3) and K/BB ratio (3.10).
