Toledo Shut out in Loss to Columbus
April 21, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release
The Mud Hens were shut out for the first time this season in a 2-0 loss to the Clippers in Columbus on Thursday. Toledo is now 6-5 on the season.
Hens SP Josh Turley (7 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO) tossed seven innings for Toledo in his second start of the season, allowing only one home run to the Clippers. Toledo showed off their defensive prowess behind Turley throughout the game, including a diving stop from 1B Jordany Valdespin midway through the game that prevented a double down the right field line.
RHP Preston Guilmet pitched in relief for Toledo, allowing two hits but no runs in the eighth.
The Clippers got on the board in the first inning, beginning with a double off the bat of Columbus 3B Michael Martinez. A passed ball from Hens C Humberto Quintero allowed Martinez to take third base, and then a ground ball from SS Erik Gonzalez sent the runner home. Quintero, a 36-year-old veteran catcher, was signed to a minor league deal earlier in the week following his release from the Toronto organization. Quintero has appeared in 471 major league games.
Columbus looked to add to their lead in the fourth inning, drawing two walks and notching a single. However, Turley pitched around the bases-loaded threat and ended the inning on a ground ball straight to the mound. With a toss over to first base, the Clippers were retired. Columbus then added an insurance run in the seventh inning after C Adam Moore drove a home run to center field.
The Toledo bats were quiet throughout the game, recording only five hits on the night. Toledo's best chance came in the seventh with back-to-back singles from 3B Casey McGehee and RF Steven Moya with no outs. However, Clippers RP Toru Murata kept Toledo in check, retiring the next three Hens batters.
The Hens play their second and final game of the series tomorrow at Columbus in a game slated for 7:15 p.m.
