Norfolk Tides News Release
Garabez Rosa homered as part of a two-hit night, but Durham took advantage of a key defensive miscue to knock off the Tides 4-2 in 10 innings Thursday night at Harbor Park.
With the game knotted at 2-2 in the 10th, Durham's Daniel Robertson ignited the game-winning rally with a one-out single off of Pedro Beato (0-1). Taylor Motter then grounded a potential inning-ending double play ball to third baseman Michael Almanzar, but Almanzar bobbled the ball before making a low throw that first baseman Joey Terdoslavich could not handle, putting runners at second and third. Richie Shaffer then lined a two-run double into the left field corner, giving the Bulls a 4-2 advantage.
Jhan Marinez (2-1) then shut the door on the Bulls victory with his second scoreless inning of relief, helping Durham take the opener of the three-game set.
Rosa, who was promoted to Norfolk from Double-A Bowie earlier Thursday, belted a 1-1 pitch leading off the third inning for his second career Triple-A homer to knot the score at 1-1. His first homer with the Tides came one season ago, when he homered in his first career Triple-A at-bat in an April 12 game at Charlotte.
Rosa also factored in Norfolk's second run of the contest, as he singled in the fifth frame and eventually scored on a single by Ozzie Martinez.
Norfolk starter Terry Doyle turned in his first Quality Start of the season, as he held the Bulls to two runs on five hits over a season-high 6.1 innings of work. He departed the contest with a 2-1 lead and the bases loaded in the seventh frame, but Carlos Corporan lined an RBI single off of Edgar Olmos to knot the score and deny Doyle his first victory of the year. Doyle walked three and struck out four, throwing 53 of his 92 pitches for strikes.
Audry Perez had two hits and a walk in the contest, upping his average to .481 (13-27) in seven games this season. Xavier Avery added a single, walk and stolen base in the setback.
The two clubs will continue their three-game series Friday night from Harbor Park, with first pitch set for 7:05. Left-hander Ariel Miranda (0-1, 4.22) gets the start for Norfolk and will be opposed by Rays prospect Blake Snell (1-1, 2.51). The first 5,000 fans entering Harbor Park will receive a color-changing Tides cup, courtesy of Autobell Car Wash.
Notes: Prior to Thursday's game, Norfolk infielder Sharlon Schoop was assigned to Class-A Aberdeen's roster...Chaz Roe struck out three in 1.1 innings of shutout relief, and opponents are now 0-for-17 with 12 strikeouts against him over his last five outings...Oliver Drake struck out the side in a scoreless ninth inning...Christian Walker went hitless for just the second time in 14 games this season.
